If you don't remember Rebekah Jones, she was the data scientist who was fired back in 2020 for not intentionally misinterpreting COVID data, went public on it, and had her home searched by police.

An unredacted version of the warrant, obtained by the Herald, shows the threatening messages were sent by a username that was different than the one Jones son used to send the memes. The document does not say how authorities determined both usernames are linked to the same account. The redacted version circulated by authorities does not reveal that there were two different usernames involved. Jones provided a screenshot of her sons account, which showed he changed to his current username in January, before the threats were made. She said he has never used the handle associated with the threatening messages.

Even if the kid had posted those things, chuds are going on Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter daily and suggesting killing politicians and minorities and they're defended for "just exercising their free speech to be frustrated with the state of America"

She drove him in and guided him into the police station herself. I don't want to minimize that DeSantis is responsible for serious Democratic Backsliding in Florida, but part of that involves calling this shit out for what it is - exploitative grifting. She's been doing this as a well for donations for years. Her entire campaign against Gaetz in an R+18 district is a prime example.

I don't disagree, but I think there's more direct motivation for her to lie for self-gain than there is for DeSantis to go after an already-fired person who is, as far as media/wikipedia goes, is already not deemed very credible.

Jones also faces a criminal charge for allegedly stalking a former student at Florida State University, where Jones taught. In a self-published manifesto, Jones admitted having sex with the student. She then lost her FSU job before going to work designing the state Department of Health Covid dashboard, a job she was also fired from amid a dispute over posting data on the website.

Jones has made claims about being forced to change data to make Floridas Covid situation appear better that she would later disavow or that independent media investigations found wanting. Last week, however, the Florida Office of Inspector General announced she met the basic criteria to press a whistleblower complaint against the state for her firing. The decision did not concern the merits of her accusations against the state.

Jones and her supporters routinely cite reporting on data discrepancies while criticizing DeSantis handling of the pandemic. But, no one has provided evidence that deaths or cases were deliberately altered from the states raw COVID data, as Jones has claimed.

This appears, though, to be a misreading of the unredacted police report by Jones and by the Herald, and also a misunderstanding of how Snapchat works. The unredacted report, which was also obtained by Motherboard, states it should be noted Snapchat uses a name to ID the account to other people ([redacted by Motherboard]) and the actual username ([redacted by Motherboard]).

This newsletter deftly and accurately assessed why Republicans would fail in the midterms before it happened and has catalogued the failure of their anti-trans rhetoric. I mention this, and this guy, to direct attention to his very well-written breakdown on why Stacy Abrams was an immoral, self-obsessed grifter that took credit for the well-fought achievements of Georgia democrats, most prominently Warnock's skill as a campaigner.

It's really important to not get caught up in the growing industry of grifters who see fascistic elements and exploit them for monetary gain & fame. We talk a lot about how many right wingers do not believe in what they say and are cynically exploiting voter bases for power.

It is, in turn, also worth cleaning up our own house when it comes to people like Abrams, and Rebekah Jones is essentially just another variant of this, but more akin to the failed grifts you see like R candidates attempting to defeat AOC.

I can't stop people from falling for these things, but I just wanted to point out that these people exist and exploit serious democratic backsliding on the part of wannabe fascist governors & senators by basically creating a persona that enables donations. This was true of Abrams, McGrath, Harrison, arguably Beto by his Governor's run, and it certainly applies to this woman.

In a situation where by some miracle FL Dems reorganize, this person can't be a part of it because she is likely as attached to their self-claimed morals as Jimmy Dore or Tulsi Gabbard. If she sees fit, she's turn on Democrats too
