Is it simply because it's hot, coastal, and liberal?

Also, what is your personal opinion of California? Have you ever been there? Do you think it's overrated?

I live there. It's too hot in the summer and not cold enough in the winter. And I was born here so I can't imagine how it feels to someone from a colder area. Also the drivers are very rude and some are crazy.

Pretty much only LA is popular. I guess you might also know the tech cities if you are into tech.

It's probably popular because it was one of the most beautiful and vibrant places to live in the US, along with being home to the rich and famous. Nowadays it has a lot of problems however, which is always going to occur with over population.

San Jose is the 3rd largest California city with a million+ people, which is more than 6 U.S. states. San Francisco and the Bay Area as a whole are densely populated. Sacramento and Fresno each have a population rivaling the state of Wyoming.

You also forgot about Orange County. San Diego has literally 1.4 million people, ranked 8th most populated in the country.

Well yeah, I don't live in the US and LA is pretty much the only relevant city to most people here.

Not all of California is hot. The state of California is bigger than Japan. There are many climates and terrains. With the exception of winter, San Francisco is colder than Boston all year.

I went there only once. To visit Disney Land. I remember it being smoggy when the plane was landing. I think its the only time I ever saw smog in person

People talk about bad drivers, but on average they're actually much better than anywhere within 50 miles of NY, Philly, or DC. The problem comes from volume, but at least when you come to a near standstill most people leave a couple car lengths in front of them to adjust accordingly. If you took the same volume of I-95 commutes or Schyulkill Expressway commuters and had them try to navigate LA it would get 1000 times worse.

Beautiful weather, great scenery, and you can freely shit in the streets.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can live there, at least in the big cities. Homes are practically a million dollars for some ancient 1960s abode, rent close to 3k for 2 bedroom, 1 bath. I mean, I know techies get paid a mint there, but what about everyone else? It's not like the pay is that much higher than anywhere else for the usual jobs.
