A report from Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown released Wednesday alleges 156 Catholic clergy members and others abused at least 600 children over the course of more than six decades.

From the 1940s through 2002, over a hundred priests and other Archdiocese personnel engaged in horrific and repeated abuse of the most vulnerable children in their communities while Archdiocese leadership looked the other way, the report reads. Time and again, members of the Churchs hierarchy resolutely refused to acknowledge allegations of child sexual abuse for as long as possible.

The report lists descriptions of graphic sexual and physical abuse allegations: It includes stories of how some alleged abusers provided victims with alcohol and drugs and describes in vivid detail how they coerced and forced victims to perform sexual acts.

To be fair, this is an investigation of decades worth of offenses so it isn't like one single person abused 600 kids.

As for in general, people who desire to do unscrupulous activities will ingratiate themselves into positions of power and trust so that when somebody even breathes in the direction of accusing them of misdeeds, everybody else has a knee jerk reaction of "Him? Never. He's trustworthy and a friend!"

It's abusing positions of trust so they can act with impunity

So it's a self feeding system where existing pedophiles join the Church because they know it gives them trust and a cover.

This is actually true.

Like let's say drag queens etc started abusing children right now en masse. It would still be decades until they started racking up numbers like the church. That is just mind blowing and depressing. I think the closest comparison is all the teachers that are molesting kids, specifically young boys.

At any rate it does a lot to castrate right wing arguments about "protecting kids". Especially if it isn't met with equal amounts of revulsion.

imo it's also a big reason why anti LGBT discourse revolves around grooming and pedophilia so heavily. Point fingers at us so thar we're the center of attention, while the church and other people in positions of power get away with countless atrocities.

Being a clergyman means that you're in a position of power that the state can't touch, you get to act out all your inner shit desires in the name of god and nobody can question you and you're safe. Also, the fact that other clergypedos get away with it only attracts more clergy pedos. Instead of feeling shame or wanting to act around their desires for kids, they know theres a place that they'll get accepted for it.

Kindergarten requires going to a lot of interning and schooling, doing a lot of planning and lessonwork, getting shit pay, being a govt worker, and then potentially losing it all for touching a kid.

But I was told that the LGBTQ community were the groomers and predators.

People use that rational to say "well if god is perfect and I'm in gods image (or gods messenger), I too am perfect because I embody gods perfection" and then abuse kids because that was what god intended them to do.

You're real close to crossing that line in my opinion. Not abusing kids (hopefully), but being delusional and using god as an excuse for it.
