An Australian surf lifesaving club has found itself at the center of a controversy following its implementation of a no-nudity policy in showers and changing rooms.

Ocean swimmer Nada Pantle, who regularly uses the changing rooms after a morning swim in Terrigal, New South Wales, said she was sent a letter warning that she had breached Terrigal Surf Life Saving Clubs nudity policy, CNN affiliate 7News reports.

A sign in the club advises users to shower in your swimming costume and change with your towel around you. Another swimmer told the BBC that the sign appeared probably three months ago.

The letter sent to Pantle reads: The board has advised members that nudity is not acceptable as per the Child Safe Policy.

It is your responsibility to follow the rules should you continue to ignore the rules, you will be subject to disciplinary action and/or including termination of your membership, the letter adds, according to 7News.

Pantle disagreed with the policy, telling CNN affiliate 9News: Thats what the change rooms are for, theyre for getting changed.

Meanwhile, club member Wendy Farley told 9News that the new policy promoted body-shaming.

I think its appalling, I think its a backwards step and I think its bad for young women, Farley said.

Pantle said the letter made her feel anxious and that she has since left the club.

I was so anxious about someone seeing something and giving a child post traumatic stress disorder, I handed my resignation, she told 7News.

CNN has reached out to Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving Australia, the countrys volunteer beach lifeguarding organization,for further clarity and comment.

Surf Life Saving Australias Child Safe Policystates that members should not shower or change at the same time as supervising groups of Children, and that they should avoid one-to-one situations with a CYP (child or young person) in a change room area; ensuring that they do not undress and avoid using a changing room with a CYP unless there are other people present.

Surf Lifesaving NSWs Jon Harkness defended the incident to 7News.

We need to be mindful of our junior members and child protection, he said.

Terrigal have merely asked people to wear their swimmers when showering and be discreet using a towel when you actually do need to get changed.

This happened very close to Terrigal (the place mentioned in the article) which brought it to mind. It was a surf club 20 minutes down the road along the coastline, the school camp was like a beach thing so I guess every kid was covered in sand and I guess the teachers wanted us clean

We were like 8 so maybe to the teachers it was just like "they're too young to be embarrassed or care" but I remember feeling horribly uncomfortable

And by forced I don't mean like physically. They just said alright all the boys walk into this shower room and strip down and get clean, the girls do the same in the other shower room. There's every chance they took zero enjoyment out of it and there was nothing sinister but it still felt I was getting naked when I didn't want to be

I've recently started going to the gym with a buddy of mine and seeing him naked in the locker room is one of the perks.

Most of the Gyms (and even open-bay barracks) I've been to in the Army have had locker rooms and/or shower areas that had privacy options (even if it only amounts to drying off/getting (un)dressed behind the shower curtain, with a bench immediately outside to set your stuff). Even my basic training barracks had 3 stalls for 'privacy' (no curtains tho), attached to the open-bay shower.

Only notable place I've been without that option is the National Training Center but that is ostensibly to convey that you won't always have options when in austere environments.

Guess weve been to different places... For Air Force, at basic, we had a room with 8 shower heads. No curtains or stalls. Some flights even did the car wash for showers (which was kind of stupid, and our flight decided not to) where you spend 10 seconds under the shower, and move clockwise or counterclockwise until you go to every shower head And while my first tech school gave us our own bathroom, our second tech school had my class and classmates in the older dorms where went back to communal showers Smaller shower room with only 4 heads. And unless it was after PT or night, usually only 2 went in at the time diagonally because there wasnt much room inside Most gyms Ive been to (on and off base) just have an open locker room. It is, however, broken into sections. By the sections are broken up by lockers. And thats just so there are more lockers. But its still open As most have been. On base, though, we do have individual showers with curtains. But none have benches outside of them with the exception of the handicap stall. They do have an iron bar for like a towel, though. And a little inside shelf. Probably for soap TBH, Im not sure Ive seen many places with individual changing rooms, though. Even at school, it was just a locker room with lockers and benches. Even just got down to their underwear and changed in there, so IDK

back in my day you'd just see the old man penis in the public pool changing rooms as a kid and it wasn't a big deal

This may come as a shock to many of you but people do not want to see you naked. I avoid places like this because they are full of pervs that just want to flash people. And then there are the pervs who film people changing. People who are against stuff like this are usually the pervs who flash and film people. Public changing rooms are pretty much a magnet for pervs.

Back when I was 18 I had never really been in a public shower or been nude around anyone really except for like two girls. I had certainly never been naked in front of another guy or vice versa.

Then 6 months later during week one of boot camp I was covered in soap and running naked through one big open shower room with like 50 other soaped up naked dudes while a man in a camouflage uniform yelled at us. Good times.

Does this even matter? I live in a town where all you can possibly do for entertainment is weed and surfing and I've never even heard of someone changing in the nude, let alone seen it myself. Everyone just wraps a towel around themself and it's fine
