Did your parents buy you a car?

The other topic got me thinking. People are saying kids should labor to buy their own phones, but what about cars? Did you get a car from your parents? I did.

The first car that was in my name though, I bought.

They bought my oldest sister a 6 year old car for her 16th birthday, and that car became my other sister's first car when she turned 16 and then my first car when I turned 16

Yep. A 1998 buick century. I drove that fucker into the ground. I got it with 44k. The odometer burned out at 268k 2 years before it finally died. I hit 8 deer with it before I finally had to scrap it.

Thanks Mom and Dad.

In theory that did, as I got handed down my sisters car when she bought a new one, and her old car was a hand me down from my parents.

Granted, the car was older than I was and had 165k miles on it when I got it.

My first car was my mom's old car. She got a new one.

They've co-signed a couple of loans since, but I paid those off with no help, I just had bad credit due to medical debt in my twenties..

Well if it makes you feel better even though it won't, I was the first born and while my parents helped with the down payment, I was responsible for the car note

Meanwhile my parents bought and paid for my little sister's Beetle, Mustang, and now Jeep >__>. Think she had a 4th car between the beetle and mustang but I can't remember.

Parents would never. Got the car on my own.

I half expect my younger brother to get a car though. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be bitter if it happened. My sister and I have been throwing shade to our mother as a joke asking, "so when are you going to give him your car and get a new one."

Yeah, but I don't know how much they paid. Couldn't have been much, since we didn't have much money.

Also, that car was a mess. Passenger seat wouldn't stay upright, so they boxes and a pipe propping it up. Rear driver seat had a hole in the floor, could literally stick your foot down to the road and touch the axel or whatever. They kept a plastic grate over the hole, but it was attached so it'd just slide around.

It was a waste too, since I didn't have any where to go or a reason to have a vehicle. I'd get sent to the post office and come straight home, and get cussed out by them. It's about a fifteen minutes round trip to the post office and back. They timed me, it took me 17 minutes, and I passed dad on the way back. He was coming to find me, and mom was about to call the police.

It was too much and I stopped driving at all. Then my aunt was desperate for a vehicle, so I gave it to her. Dad went behind my back and told them I wanted $300 and they gave it to him.

Yeah

It was a "family vehicle" for all of us to use, but realistically, I used it more than anyone else to commute to college, and they probably wouldn't have purchased it had I not started going to college in the first place.

I had one shared car for a bit, then a hand-me-down that was "mine". But after a few years of that they said they were giving the car to my cousin, so I had to buy a new one.

When I'm done with this one, it will probably also end up with a different cousin.

Yes but it was a legit POS. They wanted to see how well I would treat it and how responsible I'd be with it.

But hey, it was a ride!

Took me until the middle of college to realize that most of the girls who suddenly started giving me attention in HS were also getting free rides home in it though. Instead of using L.A. public transportation, in exchange for a simple hug or maybe a peck on the cheek they got curbside service...

My grandparents bought me my first two cars - or technically, the first was a "we got a new one, you can have our old one" situation. My parents no, though my dad lent me his for a few months while his licence was suspended (due to a careless accident that resulted in injuries but no deaths).
