I mean there's still older games I like and I try to play them in my increasingly spare time. But I just look at new games and just feel kind of empty. Nothing exciting happens in video games anymore.

Skipping the PS5/XS generation as well, I guess, since Switch "doesn't count!" for some reason.

That's because the last ground breaking video game was Minecraft in 2011.

Games these days are all just reskins, fresh coat of paint. Shooting games are all the same, 3rd person action games are all the same, fighting games are all the same.

The only difference are the setting and stories.

just been playing backlog and older titles. waiting for totk, dd2, incubus & the last crown blackenrock.

going through gothic series rn. on chapter 4 of gothic 1 almost at chapter 5 but i want to finish some treasure hunt side quest. playing as a mage which i find pretty fun even tho its repetitive. just kite around and freeze enemies + wind/fire blast. i read that gothic 2's mage is super gimped in the beginning and takes like 5 hours to even start casting stuff and then a lot of prep to get a decent enough mana but im looking forward to that so much.

This is true, and I grew up at the very dawn of videogames (late 70s), give or take Spacewar.

This probably sounds strange but I'm not sure kids today can really appreciate games in the same way people did in the generations before. The culture was different so the games were different too. There's too many other sources of instant gratification and media drip-feed to really want to get lost in a video game. At least that's been what I've observed of kids who "game" these days.

I sure hope you don't consume any art at all, since we pretty much used up all the true originality decades before anyone even had superhero movies and the like to cry about. People have mostly been creating nothing but variations for longer than most of us have been alive.

Sorta

These hyper realistic looking games coming out these days just don't interest me anymore. For me, I'd just rather watch a movie at that point. The only thing I play really nowadays is retro stuff, Nintendo games (lot of Smash/Kart), or stuff with a retro look/feel. I do have a soft spot for Gears of War, but that's the only one in that vein really.

I had that feeling until I played Sekiro, and learned the reason I was feeling that way was because too many modern single player games are too easy. There's no threat of you ever losing so it's more like watching a movie than playing a game.

Don Bluth proved this wrong in 1983, when Dragon's Lair was playing a videogame and watching a movie at the same time, and losing cost you an entire dollar.

Honestly, what Don Bluth did in 1983, is exactly what's wrong with video games forty years later. It's all presentation and no substance.

You like retro games, yet you don't think new games are interesting despite all the great action-platformers, shoot em ups, and beat em ups that have released since the PS4's release?

Trust me. I think AAA games are straight trash; a bunch a retreaded ideas, nothing remotely challenging or novel, and loads of time spent on everything except something that requires what little skill the actual gameplay requires. And I've still been very pleased with what last generation has offered and continues to offer. Don't really see the point in the current generation. Seems almost every new game that comes up that looks interesting can be played on the PS4.

For the most part.

There's still a few that interest me, but they gotta have either addictive features or something that'll hook me like reasonably good rpg mechanics.

I pretty much can't stand first person shooters or racers anymore, so tactical/rpg style games have taken their place. On the other hand they sometimes get out of control with complexity and stats.

This is probably why at one point for several months one of my most played games was tran sim world, not because it's riveting action, but because there's so little input physical input allowing you to just chill. Meanwhile there was that satisfaction of doing it correctly.

One issue is that I've basically thrashed my right index knuckle/tendon over time, so using a mouse/controller hurts a bit now.

That said I do still like some, but it's hard to woo me like they used to.

If anything I'm over most "modern" video games. So many these days are all style but little to no substance.

There's so many instances nowadays where I find myself asking "why didn't they just make this a movie?" which is something that was pretty much never said back in the NES, SNES, etc eras.

No, not really.

There are actually quite a few I'd like to play but none can be played around my two children and by the time I'd be able to play them, I'm usually too tired in the evening to care, so I just conk out in the evenings instead.
