I'm sincerely asking what people think about it. Meme popularity has been an interesting phenomenon over the years. Every so often, some indie project explodes onto the scene and gets called 'the best [genre] game/movie ever made' and then after a year or so it just kinda fades away.

This one has the makings of Undertale, from what I've noticed. Massive awards hype, praise that puts it above "all the mainstream projects with no soul," people say things like "THIS is what [other thing] should have been"

It will be interesting to chart its trajectory over the next couple of years.

It was definitely a meme. Decent game, not nearly as amazing as it was said to be. Won the Best Game Ever poll and then got beaten out by Octopath Traveler in the best game of the decade poll a couple years later. In the first round.

That's a massive fall-off.

Undertale is not even in my top 20-30 games of the 2010's if I'm being honest, but it did a lot right. Heck, I'll even listen to the soundtrack at times for fun, which I can't say I do for other games.

That's what I'm saying, though. A decent game that had its charms (I also own a version of the soundtrack, guitar covers by RichaadEB), but people blew its quality way out of proportion because it had meme popularity.

On its own merits, Undertale is pretty good. But it has that 'quirky indie game' vibe that most indie games try to have. It's good for what it is, but it's not anywhere near the best ever.

I swear, people give so many free points to indie projects and 'self-aware' works. Breaking the fourth wall is cool and all, but it's not exactly groundbreaking.

Why is having family drama elements even a bad thing though. Like people just simply state that as a reason for being bad with no elaboration... family drama can be good.

Maybe I am. But if it's got that kind of a sense of humor, it doesn't really feel like it's meant for me. That crazy 'irreverent' comedy style doesn't really do it for me. I love some things that have a profane sense of humor. Whiplash is a good example of a movie that has a lot of vulgarity and offensive subject matter, but I love it. I enjoy South Park, too.

But there's something about the meme-worthy 'lol so random' humor that just runs me off. If I'm supposed to laugh about butt plugs just because they're butt plugs, it's not for me lol

Good like Infinity War, which holds up years later and remains a triumph of long-term cinematic storytelling and character development?

but thats not why it became popular. It became popular because it attracted people outside those fan bases too.

I havent played it but Ive seen enough of videos to know it stands on its own merits.

As someone already said, that's not the only reason it became popular. It became popular because it's a good game. It also stood out due to its unique gameplay mechanics and at the time being one of the only seriously notable indie games. Undertale has earned its place, even if the fandom is really fucking cringe.

It became popular because of all the attention it received from the rabid fanbase not shutting the fuck up about it for a single moment. Like Justin Bieber had a whole bunch of "fans" who were paid to go crazy over him at the start. It snowballs.

Being a good game or unique is not enough. There are and were tons of better and more unique games. Indie games had already exploded in popularity long before Undertale showed up on the scene and there were tons of notable releases. The differentiator was the rabid fanbase.

Almost all of your second paragraph is entirely subjective. I personally believe Undertale helped kick off the indie game industry; there's no way no one has ever taken inspiration from it, or became motivated to become game makers themselves since it was largely done by one person.

You are right that the fanbase is likely what made it explode in popularity but even without that, it is legitimately a great game and I think it would have become a big hit regardless.

Characters have those thoughts but he's wrong about it being the core philosophy. The movie is at heart essentially a metaphor for a young lesbian daughter committing suicide and a grieving mother wondering what she could have possibly done differently for her entire life to prevent it.

Saw the movie when it came out. Cried. Told everyone this was movie of the year and was instantly in my top of all time list.

No one listened.
