https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/vegan-diet-us-favorite/

Plant-based diets are now more popular than keto in the US for the first time in five years, a new study shows.

Keto has held the top spot since 2018. The term refers to a diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat, and usually features more meat than average. Its often thought of as a fast way to lose weight, and has been growing in popularity in recent years.

Now, however, it appears that eating vegan is the preferred option.

In a study that used Google Trends and Adwords for consumer insights, the publication discovered that US citizens undertook 600 million diet-related searches via Google in 2022.
The highest number of searches came in January, seemingly coinciding with New Years resolutions and potentially, Veganuary.

The vegan diet came in first place with a popularity score of 79, with keto coming in second with 67. The next most-popular search was for WeightWatchers, with a score of 14.

Despite being the overall most popular diet in the US, plant-based appears to be a geographical decision as much as a nutritional one.

Ditching animal products proved the most popular in coastal states. Oregon was the biggest supporter of the vegan diet. Meanwhile, Hawaii, New York, and California also ranked highly.

In states such as Mississippi, Alabama, and Wyoming, each of which has a significant meat-production sector, the keto diet remained the most popular. This, by a wide margin.

A blue voter, statistically, is more likely to fall on the side of animal rights and activism and may therefore eat a Vegan diet solely for these reasons. Democrats also tend to live in bigger, coastal cities, where there is a plethora of health-conscious stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Trader Joes. In big cities, one is privileged enough to be picky, with sometimes difficult-to-find Vegan ingredients for sale on every corner.

In the red states, farming communities are widespread, and resources like beef are readily available. Sports like hunting and fishing are more popular in conservative states, and cutting the starch is easier than cutting the protein, in many cases. Many people who live in the Midwest, for example, find it much easier to cut the potatoes from their All-American meat and potatoes diets.

It should be said, too, that bluer states are, statistically, far healthier than red. Obesity rates are substantially lower, with more focus on overall health and wellness, rather than just weight loss. The two diets compared represent these two mindsets fairly well. Those who eat a Vegan-based diet tend to be more focused on health as a whole, doing more physical activity, and focusing on mental as well as bodily health. Whereas those on the Keto diet tend to be more concerned with simply lowering the number on the bathroom scale. Countless studies have been done proving how unhealthy the Keto diet actually is, yet it remains tremendously popular, especially in red states.

I could honestly never do keto. The idea of consuming so much fat to enter ketosis just sounds.... gross.

I could see myself going vegan in the future. I love the taste of plants. Health benefits would be amazing too.

iirc you don't enter ketosis from eating fat, but rather from not consuming carbs/sugars

Sorry, I should have worded that better.

The idea of ditching carbs and eating tons of fat (to get enough calories in) just doesn't sit right with me.

I have tried a few different brands and types of plant based meat products. The problem with them is they either smell like shit when they cook or taste like shit when you eat them. Obv i rather deal with the odor during cook time so it tastes better. But my point is that until they can smell AND taste good then I will not be giving them my money.

Since most people don't avoid carbs well enough to actually trigger ketosis, isn't the "keto diet" just Atkins rebranded?

I could do that, but literal, medical keto sounds like torture.

Are there even longitudinal studies on Keto? The whole thing sounds like a perfect recipe for early arteriosclerosis, specially if done the worst way. At least WE KNOW vegan is healthy and the downsides can be done away with supplements.

If you do a proper keto diet where you avoid processed foods, its basically the human diet for the past thousandy years. So you'll die at 35

Not sure if serious, but humans didn't die around the age of 35 before modern times (at least not of old age). The average age in past eras was around that number because the infancy mortality rate was much, much higher back then, and before antibiotics were a thing people could die from something as simple as a cut. Health problems also occured among people who didn't regularly get all the nutrients a human body needs, but it certainly was not because the foods weren't 'processed'.
There were however people fortunate enough who managed to jump those hoops and lived to be around 70 years old.

Yeah, if you were lucky enough to get past infancy and enter adulthood, you'd probably have a decently long life

I'd definitely not do either one long term. I'm a lifter, so hitting my macros as a vegan is definitely tough. I've done keto, but I absolutely hated the period going in and out of it.

I get best results on simply focusing on a pretty balanced diet that leans a bit more towards protein. It's easy to stick to and simple to throw together meals. So I can actually maintain it, which is the most important aspect

One thing that keto freaks might get right, is that main problem of the American diet is excess carbs. Adhering to eating non to minimally processed, whole foods and not going over your bodys caloric needs while doing regular exercise should be the key for most people to stay healthy.

We can have Argentina as an example which is the most carnivore country in the planet, yet the cardiovascular disease rate there is half that of the US.
