Our family dog, a 15 year old chihuahua, has cancer and a few days ago started experiencing organ failure. Hes home now with pain medication, but probably wont make it through the night. If he does, were taking him to be put down tomorrow. Im driving to my moms house tomorrow morning to be there.

This dog is my first and only pet. I dont really consider myself an animal person, let alone a pet or dog person. No desire to ever have a pet, didnt even want this dog back when we got him. So its kind of surprising to me how sad I am. I guess I didnt realize how much I love the little guy. I havent even lived at home for the past 8 years. Still, he was always happy to sit with me and watch tv when I visited home for the holidays.

Im not very affectionate, especially towards animals, but I hope I get to see him before he goes. And I hope he knows Ill miss him, and that I care about him.

Damn that's tough man. Hope you and your family are okay. Sounds like your dog lived a nice life.

I got home just a while ago. Dog is sleepy and upset but he let my pet him before going back to bed.

I'm so sorry. I lost my first pet in May.

My condolences. We had to put our golden down 2 weeks before Christmas.

Said my goodbyes. Neither is taking him to get euthanized now.

It can be kind of weird how intrinsically pets become part of our lives, even if we don't actively interact with them much. Unless they actively antagonize us (in which case it tends not to be so sad to see them go), they tend to just become this sort of background of positivity because they're friendly to us and the people around us enjoy them. Being so passive makes that easy to take for granted, which in turn makes it really shocking to lose.

Are you going to get your own pet? You do sound like a pet person.

Definitely not. I am not responsible enough for a pet and I dont think I ever will be.

Sorry for your loss. One reason some people don't want pets is because it's hard parting from them.

I couldnt even watch when we had put down one of our horses and later, our donkey. They were my best friends.

We put down our 13 year old puggle a couple weeks back and it sucked so much calling my wife and daughters to tell them the seizures were getting worse even with meds and that we didn't have any options.

I'm glad you got to get home and see your pup before it went.

since I'm allergic to dogs, i have never known this loss but my sympathies

Got our doggos ashes back today. Mom is putting them near the spot he liked to nap.
