I remember first seeing this story and being mad because hit-and-runs are horrendous, but then when news came out about the guy's traffic history... How can he be stopped that many times without a license and not be in prison?

You can most certainly go to prison for a DUI. Now if you just came to troll a topic about a tragic death, leave.

A DUI is a different class of offense as a moving violation. It clearly says traffic infractions in the link.

A Hawaii News Now examination of Miyashiros traffic record turned up virtually every offense except drunk driving.

We dont send people to prison for driving w expired license, speeding, etc.

You literally said "They dont send people to prison for moving violations.". DUIs are moving violations. Seriously, stop trying so hard to aCkShUaLlY up this topic.

Thats even though that as a repeat offender, he was potentially eligible for jail time.

That's in response you your false statement about DUIs not being moving violations, not saying that the suspect was drunk. Stop being purposefully obtuse.

Also please address that sentence in the article that was quoted.

A traffic violation is a minor infraction that breaks traffic rules such as speeding or running a stop sign. A DUI is more serious than a traffic violation.

None of which matters because he didnt drive drunk.

The infuriating thing about people like you is that you assume me arguing with dumb shit you say is equivalent to me supporting this guy.

Different states have different laws, a class C misdemeanor including speeding has a potential penalty of 30 days in jail in TN.

Regardless, should be speaking more about the fact that this man had so many violations and the law allowed him to remain on the streets resulting in a death.

Exactly. I honestly don't think the "possible" 20 year sentence is enough for taking a life.

They should have taken his license away forever after 20.

After the first 30 he should have been getting a year for each offense.

Certain types of crime in the US are treated with absolute force, and others with slaps on the wrist. While as a country we have the world's largest prison population, our punishments for violations of driving laws are comparatively mild. For example, the legal BAC limit of .08 is on the high end in comparison to other countries: it's .05 in much of Europe, and countries often have lower limits for newer drivers.

That would be why I said jail. However, repeat offenders can be charged with a felony, which can result in prison time.

Ffs don't try to aCkShUaLlY this shit. I trust the attorneys that I work with more than some random nobody on this site, and one of the ones I chat with regularly said he should've been in prison. Prison. Not jail. State deputy attorneys general are better versed in Hawaii law than you. So shut the fuck up.

If you'recaught driving on a suspended license your car should get impounded for the duration of the suspension. (Without wracking up fees that is, or maybe $1/day)

In California, if you're caught driving without a valid license, the car can get impounded for 30 days. And the fees per day, vary by the lot it's taken to. But it's usually at least $1200. So usually that's an outcome you want to avoid.

He definitely should've been stopped a long time ago, I know there's usually a limit to how many infractions you can get and it's not greater than 164.
