  1. Catch and evolve all the pokemon you can in your game (130/151)
  2. Trade to get the evolutions of Alakazam, Gengar, and Golem (fun fact: you can do an in-game trade for a Machamp in Yellow) (133/151)
  3. Trade for all the version exclusive pokemon in other games: Ekans, Arbok, Meowth, Persian, Magmar, and Electabuzz (139/151)
  4. Trade for non-version exclusive pokemon that aren't in Yellow for some reason lol: Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Koffing, Weezing, Jynx, Raichu (145/151)
  5. Trade for all your choice pokemon in your save file: 2 Eevolutions, the other Hitmon, and the other 2 fossil pokemon (150/151)
  6. Either hack, trade, or glitch Mew into your game >_> (151/151)
You have to do a minimum of 15 trades. Fuck, that's a lot of trading. And that's only Gen 1.

That's so much tedious setup tho. You gotta fight certain trainers or hope you get certain encounters that don't have certain DVs. Fuck that >_>

Yeah, a girl in the Underground Path north of Saffron wants a Cubone for her Machoke. When you get it, it will evolve into a Machamp.

This. I requested all three games for my birthday before realizing they were all the exact same game. When I figured it out I got pissed off and only kept Yellow. Which remains as the only Pokemon game I've played. The trading mechanic was also an obnoxious putoff.

Didn't gen 1 also have limited evolve items? Like there's no way to get Arcanine and Flareon without a trade?

I can't remember it's been a while.

Don't you just buy Evo stones from Celadon dept store?
Gen 2 only gave you a single Metal Coat and one Kings Rock then told you to go get Scizor, Steelix, Politoed and Slowking. Outside of the version exclusives I think that's where that sort of thing started.

There's only a limited number of Moon Stones in gen 1. But there's enough for one of every pokemon that needs it. Gen 2 it's a lot more annoying getting all the stones you need.

The only limited item was the Moon stone, but there was enough to evolve every mon iirc. You can buy all the other evo stones in Celadon. Gold and Silver had limited stones (I think only like 1 or 2 of each lol). Crystal *slightly* fixed this by having stones be rare prizes from calling certain trainers.

Pokemon Stadium was great for this, since every time you beat the elite 4 iirc it gifted you with one of the "unique" pokes you normally needed to trade for.

I forget if it was "smart" and only gave you ones you didn't already have, or just gave you them at random, though.

Of course the easier thing to do was just to deposit your pokemon in the N64 Pc and transfer them to a new save lol

loooooooooooooooooool no

3rd versions are usually the hardest to complete because they have some exclusives from both versions but also miss exclusives from both versions. You need to trade with both versions to get all the pokemon in it, whereas with the base versions, you just need the other version.

Oh yeah, I abused the shit out of the Elite 4 in Pokemon Stadium. IIRC they give you the starters, the fossil pokemon, the Hitmons, and an Eevee. I'm pretty sure it was random because I would get pokemon I already had

Huh, I never knew that. I've played:

Gold
Sapphire
FireRed
Diamond
HeartGold
Black
Black 2
X
Alpha Sapphire
Sun
Ultra Sun
Let's Go Pikachu
Sword
Brilliant Diamond
Arceus

So I've played a lot of Pokemon, but I've never had one of the third versions.

Holy crap no way. This would be the first time in poke history the in-game poke trade actually benefits us in our favor instead of something like trade our dragonite for their pidgey

I can't remember if it's a mainline game or a fan one but there's one trade where they send you a Haunter (I think) with an Everstone and then make fun of you.

Yeah it was basically a special edition that came out after Red and Green, main difference is that it improved the sprites. The western Red/Blue are based on Japan's Blue, but with the original Red/Green encounter tables and exclusives.

There's a minor flub in one of the cinnabar trades as a result, where the npc says your Raichu evolved, but in J-Blue you gave them (i think) a Kadabra?

Yeah, Blue was the original "3rd version" from Japan's Red and Green versions. All it really did was improve the pokemon and overworld sprites, fixed a bunch of glitches, and changed up the encounters. It had a bunch of minor things too like wild encounters for Jynx and Lickitung (which wasn't possible in Red and Green), different prizes at Celadon (the same as in American Blue), and HP Up being available in Celadon Store. But otherwise barely anything changed gameplay-wise >_> I don't see it being worth it if you already had Red and Green back in the day.
