Republicans seem to be under the impression that someone can burn through their EBT card or welfare check in a day and then just press the "Free Money" button and receive a new one every day.

They truly think people on food stamps live a cushier life than the middle class.
lots of them are abusing the system though, my sister is the best example of this, she's on a welfare program over here in canada and they didnt work for 10 yrs because her and her boyfriend were constantly finding new excuses not to work, he now found a job but he's paid in cash so they can keep getting the welfare checks

I know I'm paying for this shit with my taxes and it's annoying but it's my sister and she has childen so clearly I'm not going to do anything about it

edit: I'm gonna clarify that this doesn't mean I am for those new restrictions in case someone wants to jump at my throat for saying some people are abusing the system

Look up which states benefit from welfare programs the most and how those votes tend to vote

Questions: who are the poor people in the American South? Might there be some historical reasons why?

That aside, the poor in any state are less likely to vote, and those that do majority vote for Democrats. We have data on this!

It just takes one facebook post about someone buying a cart full of steaks and paying with EBT...

I'm leaning towards option 1 anyway.

Middle class and upper middle class America is so far divorced from the American poor that they just have no idea what that population looks like. So they just make up bullshit based on the stereotypes they hear.

No, it literally is not a money thing

the purpose is to punish people for being poor by arbitrarily restricting the food they can eat

It's a question about their perspective on "earn". To them, this benefit was not "earned", and therefore should not be given.

Republicans operate under a framework that life itself must be earned, that if you do not earn, then you die.

This is obviously the truth. Nobody who is compassionate and understanding of the poor's situation would create rules like this. Even a Policy Making Robot with it's cold, hard logic would be able to understand the dehumanizing effects policies like this have on economically disenfranchised people and how counter-productive it is as a measure to "rehabilitate them" into "not being poor". These policies are created from a place of resentment and justified with Late-Stage Capitalism gobbledygook to convince themselves that they are just and moral in oppressing the poor even further.

Once the extra food stamps from covid benefits go away in March, you want to know how much I'll be getting in food stamps per month?

$23.

Not $230. $23.

I already don't know how I'm supposed to feed myself on that as it is. If these restrictions pass, the impossible becomes even impossible... er.

The whole grain tends to be healthier although slightly more expensive, but then you see the no fresh meats allowed and you wonder WTF are they going for here. Also a weird take from the GOP and politicians in general who are in favor of subsidizing the meat market.

But at the end of day its a fascist and silly/awful restriction. Although we know that the GOPs ulltimate goal is to abolish all federal aid.

What do you think costs more, giving someone $200 a month, or giving someone $200 a month and implementing restrictions on how they can spend it?

these programs that punish welfare recipients consistently cost MORE money. See also: drug testing welfare recipients, which typically costs way more money to implement than the savings they get by kicking a small number of drug addicts off welfare

it is, quite literally, designed to punish poor people

We really need to stamp out this idea that the GOP's base is poor

https://www.facingsouth.org/2017/06/rural-south-defies-demographic-and-political-stereotypes
First of all, most Trump voters were not members of the white working class. In reality, about 65 percent of white Trump voters had incomes of over $50,000 a year. Even among white voters without college degrees who voted for Trump, 60 percent were in the top half of the income distribution.

White grains are cheaper. Which for people on SNAP have limited money to use for food. There's certainly no goal in forcing people to make cheaper choices, just making it harder for those on assistance to feed themselves.

do you really think there is no rural vs urban divide in voting patterns?

If there are 20000 rural poor people who 100% vote Republican and 4 million urban poor people who vote Democrat 50.5% of the time, that's 2.02 million Democrats and 2 million Republicans. Aka poor people are more Democratic than Republican even though the Republicans are dominating in those rural areas.

You have a framing problem where "white rural" people are the face of the poor and therefore there votes inform who the "party of the poor" is more.

It's just as confusing to realize they're blue collar workers making $60K a year that vote for Politicians pushing anti-union and right to work laws and very Evangelical or Catholic and very un-Christlike wishing to discriminate against LGBT people or punish people for (insert reason) because it wouldn't be "fair" in some way if they weren't punished or some such nonsense. And they're this way because American Exceptionalism and Patriotism is their crack, Christianity is their air and Reagan is their God and Jerry Falwell and Anita Bryant are their patron saints.
