Work for a couple of years now and It feels like the logical progression if I'm being honest.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by localization. Going by your example, it sounds like you mean taking shitty, poorly documented academic code and turning it into something well engineered, but I could also interpret that as doing some sort of automated cleaning up of poorly written sentences, and traditionally localization means identifying a spot in a larger area where some particular event or manipulation has occurred.
