I still have yet to see anything transphobic about anything that Rowling has said. It's basically just a meme at this point. When I asked what specifically was transphobic about that blog post on her website, I got crickets.

She helped fund a women's shelter that excludes trans women.

For those that are trying to guilt others in boycotting this game, the big reason you guys can say that with a "houlier than thou" attitude is because you never cared about Harry Potter to begin with. But I guarantee you, most of you will throw out your principals and ethics when its something you like that gets "cancelled" and continue to purchase or participate in the thing you enjoy.

Also, why you're seeing huge amounts of left leaning users arguing that you can seperate the art from the artist is because there's a huge overlap of left leaning people, LGBTQ+, and Harry Potter fans. By saying they're not an ally because they buy a video game means you are alienating people who are actually on your side.

tbh I kinda forgot about the Harry Potter game until people started talking about boycotting it. A month ago I would've thought this game was releasing around summer

Rowling is already super rich. Whether people buy the product or not will not affect her. Shaming others for buying a game of a fantasy series they like isn't going to help either.

They can direct discourse and conversation about Rowling being a TERF to inform people, but not shame them (unless there was obvious trans-hate stuff in the actual game of course)

It's as easy as a google search to know that is true. Hell, most of the left leaning users, like me, in this very topic are arguing for the seperation of the art and artist. Something you don't see with someone like Dave Chappelle for instance.

Hopefully the game will end up being good. Devs probably hoping for a sequel

She just casually drops it in an interview after the final book was released. Nothing about it in the books whatsoever. She has the writing acumen of Dr Suess.

Fact is that anyone that is buying this firsthand knowing about JKR is not a good person. Buy it secondhand, pirate it, get it from a library, or just don't play it. It's not hard.

Pretty sure jkr will never go broke no matter what we do. Might as well enjoy what you want (I won't be buying it though)

Heck yeah! Its totally normal to want sex scenes in childrens books. Only a bigot would think otherwise!

I don't think anyone is wrong to feel the way they do about the game, but I think it's a massive mistake to get so hyperfocused on this game as if it's a defining social movement. The feeling of not wanting JKR to profit in any way is completely valid, but the way some people are expressing that is just never going to go anywhere.

All I'm going to say to this whole mess is that most people probably only seriously know JK Rowling as "British Harry Potter Lady", in the same sense that those who aren't that plugged into Jeopardy only know James Holzhauer as "Jeopardy Guy"; most people probably aren't seriously following whatever inane Twitter rant she had, & probably don't follow it beyond a TMZ article or Family Guy joke. Spending too much time on social media is really poison for the mind.

Second, attacking the people who have interest in the game is really not the most effective way to pursue your ideals. All you're doing is just making those people persecuted & compelling them to potentially buy the game in spite. A factor that makes me view MLK's advocacy for non-violent protests in a distinctly new light.

Third, if you're so bothered about who benefits & is affected by products bought & sold, then I suggest you discard the device you're reading/posting on, & live the rest of your life as a hermit in the mountain. The device you're reading this very text on was probably made with rare earth metals obtained with questionable practices, almost definitely constructed in Foxconn's Chinese factories, & the software probably had some crunch hours involved in its development. Even if you go to a McDonald's, you have no way of knowing which employee may donate their salary, no matter how little, to potentially "bigoted" causes. I'm certain some McD's employees will probably buy the game; will you seek out & cancel them too?

Finally, I'm not into Harry Potter & will probably never buy this game, regardless of its quality. I have no metaphorical horse in this race, so to speak, so don't even bother with the accusations that I'm defending or making any excuses.

It's generally my policy not to be directly accusatory to folks (when implication works just fine). At the end of the day, if someone has already chosen to buy the game, nothing I say will sway them, so I'm fine with reminding people of the issue and let it be.
