Until a speaker is elected, the house of representatives can't do anything, nor can the legislative branch of the government. Without a speaker:

• Reps can't be sworn in, so they can't even function as members of congress
• Bills can't be brought to the floor for a vote
• The legislative branch can't send bills to the president's desk because both the house and senate have to approve them
• New government spending can't be approved because the house has to approve that. It's fortunate that the 117th congress (this is the 118th) approved this year's budget before their term ended. If the 117th congress had simply done a continuing resolution like house republicans wanted, the government would likely be shut down until the GOP can actually elect a speaker and vote on spending bills.

And since we're seeing between 19 and 21 house republicans vote against McCarthy in some form or fashion, who knows if they could even agree on their own bills if they did manage to agree on a speaker.

Motion to adjourn until 8pm eastern is approved, so it looks like they'll continue tonight.

If that were to happen, I'd assume the court of public opinion would blame republicans since that's where the chaos is...

But I also thought Trump would never come close to being elected, so who knows.

Like I said before, Ranked Choice Voting would've solved this after the 1st vote.

If you leave a blank 2nd choice, you're considered not present.

May result in McCarthy being the Speaker, but it would at least make the US look like less of a joke right now.

I'm assuming republicans motioned to adjourn until 8pm in hopes that fewer democrats will show up. We'll see what happens.

Place the three hopefuls in an enclosed arena with one knife. Whoever is left alive, or standing since we are apparently a civilized culture now, is the new Speaker.

As McCarthy concedes to each ridiculous, untenable, undeliverable demand, they just invent a new one. We've been saying for decades that this is what the Republican party/conservatism has become, now they're feeling it.

There's no long term way out of this and it's only going to get worse as the people who were molded by the right wing information echo chamber increasingly begin to take office.

It's certainly not going to be better when people come in that make MTG and Gaetz look like statesmen or who had their brains shaped by QAnon and Covid conspiracies.

This is insanity. He literally just joined Congress and he's an election denier as well. He's also a beneficiary of the exact type of criminal justice policies that the Republican Party hates and considers soft on crime.
