Budget let's say ~$150. Probably prefer open back since that's supposed to have better audio quality and I'll be listening at home.

My Audio-Technica ATH-A700 headphones are my favorites but have been discontinued for awhile. You can still buy the ATH-AD700X that are similar but with the open back.

"music-listening" is kind of vague though. If you're a bass head, you'd probably want something else since these are more of a balanced sound (mine were actually little sharp/bright out of the box but mellowed as they broke in)

not sure what qualifies as a bass-head but I don't like it when music shakes the car I'm in. I listen to some higher pitch stuff including a guy who screams like a girl

Hd 560s or he400se.

Just add a bass boost eq If you want more bass. For openbacks I tend to boost all of them a lil bit because almost all are either flatish down to 20 hz or have a huge drop off somewhere below 50 hz (like stax headphones lol).

Only openbacks with a nice bass shelf (no wonky drop off below 50 hz like sr007mk2 or l700) by default are pretty expensive like Dan Clark Audio's Expanse ($4000) and Sennheisers' he-1 ($60,000).

Oops I forgot that he400se prob requires an amp (its sensitivity is 91db per mw). Try the hd560s which has a sensitivity of like 104 db per mw. I use it on my phone and it gets really loud

Hd58x is prob good too but never tried. Looks like the same build quality as hd600, hd6xx, and hd650. Hd560s feels a bit cheap compared to them due to lack of aluminum band which might put off some people.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/3/0/AAZsuhAADv-S.jpg

Maybe hard to tell but see it plastic band for hd560s. Hd600 uses aluminum. Ive had my hd560s for almost a year and no problems tho.

I can power my HE400SE from my motherboard, but it really depends on the motherboard you have too. HD560 is pretty good, but I prefer the HE400SE if you have something that could power it.

I have a TUF gaming Z490-Plus, not really sure how to look into whether it provides good power or has good onboard sound

My friend with an HE400SE has an Asus board too, if it has that section with that drop down list with an Extreme option, it should be able to.

i ended up going with the HD 560s. They're coming tomorrow, I'll report how I like them when they do.

I've been using Steelseries arctis 1 as my all-purpose headphones for maybe a couple years now so hopefully this will be a nice improvement.

So I've plugged in the HD 560s. I've pretty much just gone plug and play into my PC and am sitting on the couch listening to stuff.

Here's a song I'm really familar with that I'm trying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq8r1ZTma08

So a couple observations. The first is I thought I'd notice the "open back" more because I've only ever used closed back. But I don't notice much difference in "closeness" personally. Just that I can hear my heater just a little bit lol.

That said, I definitely notice a far greater clarity in regards to different sounds and instruments. There are several aspects to this song I've genuinely never noticed before, such as the way his voice his doubles on the first half of the lines leading up to the chorus. I can't list everything off because it's a lot of little things but there seems to be entire instruments or synthetic effects I just could not detect before.

One thing I'm iffy on is that the voices in songs I'm listening to seem a bit more drowned out than previous things I've listened on. Like, the voice is the same distance or position as the instruments while I'm using to vocals sort of "popping out" more in front of the instruments.

Im glad you seem to be enjoying them. Hearing new things in songs youve listened to dozens of times is always fun. When I got my first pair of decent headphones I didnt really appreciate just how much better they were until I tried using my gaming headset again a few weeks later and they sounded like complete shit in comparison.

Ive never been blown away by soundstage in any of my headphones either, at least in terms of hearing things as though they werent still being played a few inches from my ear. I tend to notice it more vertically than horizontally though.

I had the same thing when I switched over from my Sennheisers to the Edition XS. I adjusted to it pretty quickly though, sometimes your brain just has to get used to a new sound signature. There are definitely more mid-forward headphones out there if you end up thinking youd prefer that though.

put on my old headphones for comparison sake and wow they are so bad in comparsion. I'm listening to this synth track a friend made and like you can't even tell it's good because all the nuance and sharpness and positioning is lost.
