And are no longer working on the sequel (that I didn't even know was being made tbh). They've also been pushed out of the development for the Amazon TV show. Seems like it could be a plot for a side quest in Disco Elysium

imagine putting in all that work to make Disco Elysium one of the most highly regarded indies in years, and then having someone come in and push you out of what you helped build.

Yeah, that's what sucks about being in a creative industry. Not only could your ideas be commandeered by the suits and altered well past the point of recognition, but they could then throw you out of the company entirely while that world you worked so hard for years to develop is now theirs to do what they want with.

Ironically this fits in perfectly with the theme of the game XD

Guess I won't be getting the sequel then.

Did the devs sign a contract without reading it or something? I can't envision them getting pushed out of their own company unless they were cut fat checks and signed without reading first, or knew this was a possibility and gambled on it anyway.

It could be ownership thinking they don't need them anymore and firing them to save payroll

But this isn't EA where "ownership" is some corporate entity seperated by devs by like 10 levels of management. The whole company is 60 people.

EDIT: When Disco Elysium was released, it was only 30 people, so even smaller.

Well this sucks, I thought Kurvitz basically was ZA/UM but it seems there were financial backers that had the ability to do this. Shame.

That's so fucked up.

I just beat DE for the first time a few days ago, and I'd love a sequel, but hearing this sort of ruins that for me entirely.

Greed isn't limited by the size of the company. If ownership thinks they can reproduce the results of the old team while paying less for a new team, you bet your ass they will.

It's too bad there won't be an in-universe sequel by the same team, but honestly DE is already one of the greatest games ever made and though it builds ideas of future events and shapes the edges of a broader world, the game is very much about one moment in time for one particular person. I'm so thankful that DE exists that I'm not mourning the lack of a good sequel. I will however mourn the creatives getting screwed by the company's financiers.

that's the sad thing, they are blowing this company up and probably don't even fully realize it. They probably figured "they're hard to work with anyway we just need the IP" when actually they just flushed away all their gold

I eagerly await the shockedpikachu.jpg moments from the company when every development update they give has a hostile reaction from the fanbase

Well now the sequel's gonna suck. Ah well.

The money people don't hear this. The community managers hear it, and maybe the devs hear it by proxy, but it usually falls on deaf ears as the signal goes higher up the chain.

Usually the suits won't realize something was a bad idea until it doesn't make them as much money.

That's, y'know, if they don't blame others besides themselves, which has a habit of happening.

This is the classic "don't look like sellouts so we can offload another IP later" thing happening. These guys were very well paid, so dont be dredging up hate for the new guys.

"Pushed out" is almost always legalese for "I agreed to and profited from this but still want the sympathy campaign.
