I like Tom Holland because I always picture Spiderman as being your typical teenager and Holland will probably forever look like a teenager.

One of the poll options is not like the others, and apparently nobody's noticed yet.

And it's not Shinji Todo (whose name apparently I shouldn't have copy/pasted).

Theodore Edward Coneys was a murderer with a nickname, never actually an actual "Spiderman" role, right?

I've heard the "big three" described as thus: Tobey Maguire is a perfect Peter Parker but a weak Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield is a badass Spider-Man but an awful Peter Parker. Tom Holland is the happy medium between the two who is good, but not great, at both sides of the coin.

I disagree with the seemingly popular sentiment that Tobey was a good Peter. Like, yes, the mask allows Peter to be much more confident and quippy than he ever is without it, but even without the mask, he should still show that kinda... Sarcastic ability, even if he doesn't act on it. Tobey comes off WAY too reserved to believe that, even with the mask, he can ever truly be Spiderman-esque.

I think people just see how nerdy/reserved Tobey comes off and assume it's a good fit.

Definitely not Tom Holland. Not because he's not good, but because I am absolutely 100% over teenage Peter Parker. Peter is an adult.

Glad to see the love for Josh Keaton in this topic

I think people have nostalgia for Tobey because he's the version many of us grew up with (he got a much louder pop in my theater when he appeared in No Way Home than Andrew Garfield did). I think he does a good job of portraying Peter's insecurities, but he's not great at the quips. Garfield's Spidey is perhaps too good at quipping to the point that he can come off as almost abrasive at times (Spidey quips to cover up his nerves, not because he's a jerk), and his portrayal of Peter is a bit too cocky, too.

Holland hits the sweet spot of insecure teenager and witty quips.

Right, but Spiderman has never really been portrayed that way outside of Tobey. I can't really remember an instance where Spiderman and Peter Parker come off as two completely different people as much as Tobey's version.

Tobey comes off more like they were trying to do a young Clark Kent rather than Peter.

The Sam Raimi trilogy is the only one I've seen all the way through (besides the old cartoons.) I can't speak against the other adaptations since I haven't watched them, but Tobey Maguire is the Spiderman I've always known.

Right, but Spiderman has never really been portrayed that way outside of Tobey. I can't really remember an instance where Spiderman and Peter Parker come off as two completely different people as much as Tobey's version. Spiderman has usually been more... Peter coming into his own and being more confident, not Peter becoming a completely different personality.

EDIT: Basically, I'm not saying Tobey's portrayal feels weird overall. I'm just saying it feels weird for Peter Parker/Spiderman.

someone like scarlet can correct me when i'm wrong but from what i remember, the lee/ditko peter was very insecure and not all that sarcastic (there's a reason he got bullied in high school). what you're describing is more like the later, mature peter. sure, tobey was bad at playing that peter but i thought his portrayal of an old-school peter was fine (even though he obviously looked too old to be in high school).

While that's true, that Spiderman was also less sarcastic, in tune. My point wasn't that Peter needs to be sarcastic, just that it's the most glaring example of Peter and Spiderman seeming almost nothing alike. When Tobey's Peter becomes Spiderman, it suddenly feels like he's reading a part made for somebody else. Tobey's Spiderman doesn't feel like a more confident version of Tobey's Peter, basically. It feels like he's getting possessed.
