Almost everyone has felt the sting of rising prices. As of August, 60% of Americans were living paycheck to paycheck, according to a recent LendingClub report a number that hasnt budged much since inflation hit 40-year highs. A year ago, the number of adults who felt stretched too thin was closer to 55%. Even high-income earners are feeling the strain, the report found. Of those earning more than six figures, 45% reported living paycheck to paycheck, a jump from the previous years 38%. More consumers living paycheck to paycheck indicates that many are continuing to lose their financial stability, said Anuj Nayar, LendingClubs financial health officer. A separate report by Bank of America found that 71% of workers feel their pay isnt keeping up with the cost of living, bringing the number of people who feel financially secure to a five-year low. Many Americans are dipping into their cash reserves, and nearly half are falling deeper in debt.

Its really not about the wages. The problem is the housing market and rent prices. The cost of food doesnt help either.

Could be as simple as a single visit to the ER that wiped them out.

And how do you think people would be able to keep up? With higher wages of course.

I agree to some extent, but also if the cost of living and food didnt go up so high then the minimum wage wouldnt need to be adjusted either. Weve gotten to the point that if wages went up then so would the cost of living because of greed alone. I really wish our governments or states had more control over the housing and rental market.

Living in places where the cost of living is higher
Having medical conditions
etc.

Not everyone is poor for being stupid with money.

Kind reminder that living paycheck to paycheck is a shitty indicator of how well you are doing.

Which is why the number is so high. Living to your maximum means is what many, many people in the middle and upper middle class do.

Seriously. Wages have barely increased since the 90s overall and yet inflation and cost of living wayyy outscales the additional money. It's such a trickle down economics point of view, Reagan really was the absolute worst thing to ever happen to this country.

What percent of people are home owners? Cost of housing going up didn't effect me as a homeowner since my monthly mortgage remains unchanged

Real wages have actually declined.

This is all because our economy has continued to grow, it's just more and more of the proceeds of that growth rest in the pockets of fewer and fewer people. It's the natural consequence of ever-widening economic inequality. Unless decisive steps are taken - and quickly - the standard of living for most Americans will continue to decline. I'm talking not only a drastic increase in the minimum wage, but also in taxes on the wealthy. And universal healthcare and decisive steps to control out-of-control price inflation in sectors like housing and education. Throw in anti-climate change effort and you have an agenda whose breadth hasn't been seen since LBJ's Great Society, but more likely since FDR's New Deal.

It's more because every other country has grown an economy since the 1960s, and labor is way the hell cheaper in Bangladesh and Vietnam.

For most people in that position, like me, we had a head start. I got into a high paying job straight out of graduating college in the financial industry and learned about passive income, hence why I have plenty in my savings account just for emergency but for many they're not that lucky. I had a friend who saved up way more money than me, then he got a heart attack and had to go to ER that basically ate up all of his savings.

I'm just saying, asking why people aren't as lucky as you when it comes to financial situation is doing yourself less favors.

I lost 20k (all of my savings) to get my job that pays 200k lol. People act like high paying jobs require no investment to get them. There are exceptions to the rule, but you will more than likely need a MBA to get that high paying management job that's above a Team lead.
