How often do hurricanes have enough energy to keep going after they cross Florida? I'd kind of assumed that was pretty rare, but I realize I don't actually know at all.

Katrina did that in 2005, though it was going the other direction (east to west).

And Katrina wasn't exactly a typical storm, so I guess I'm right to think that this is unusual. Wild.

It isn't actually that uncommon for storms to survive landfall, especially with Florida since it is so narrow and the storms can get back out over the ocean quickly and larger storms can span the land and be over the ocean on both sides.

You can filter just to Florida on this site to see the tracks that all the storms take.

Boring and raining here in Eastern North Carolina.

Saying that tornadoes can still come from it.

Filled up on gas Tuesday.

Went to the ABC yesterday and stocked up just in case it tried a okie doke.

Also grabbed a dozen cans of food and a 24pk of water at Food Lion.

Have a mirror, flint and magnifying glass on my keys.

There have been 19 tropical cyclones that have crossed Mexico or Central America from the Atlantic into the Pacific or vice versa since 1851. So hurricanes crossing Florida can't be that uncommon.

Have a mirror, flint and magnifying glass on my keys... and recently a key opener.

Many times I bought Corned Beef and the opener was missing.

Had to open it with pliers.

So now I keep one.
When my grandfather landed at Inchon during the Korean War they handed out C-rations, basically meals in metal cans. But apparently not the accessory packs, because nobody had a can opener. He had to open them using his bayonet.

From the rest of his life he carried a P-38 can opener in his pocket.

It didn't manage to regain hurricane strength, but Ivan plowed through multiple states before went back to sea, said hello to Florida, and then regained enough strength to become a tropical storm before managing to make US landfall a third time. Post-tropical storms reforming is rare, but to do it after carving through the US is even more impressive.
