It's almost as if people are catching onto the fact that it's becoming borderline impossible to "make it" in America and that working crappy jobs that don't pay (in addition to having you constantly berated by the public) isn't worth it.

But then again it's their fault. Hard work is all you need to succeed. Pull up those bootstraps!

as someone who used to work in the restaurant industry, I cant imagine how much better working conditions can get. Restaurant work is always hectic and stressful but a job is a job.

Enough pay that their basic needs can be met with some extra leftover for spending/saving so they don't need to work multiple jobs.

Well tbh this kind of attitude doesn't help. If the job already kinda sucks, people like you make it even less enticing.

It's pretty demoralizing working your ass off in a kitchen making like $13/hour while the servers take in $25+ for easier work.

Note the "used to". Any of the reasons you maybe have stopped are why others are also choosing not to work these jobs in the current market.

That's not how it works at all. Head Chefs are making the most out of everyone in the building and Wait Staff are making like $4 an hour with tips. And sometimes the Cooks take a cut of the tip money.

It's how it works where I've worked, and I've heard similar stories of other local restaurants. Of course I've never worked in a place with tip pooling, so I can't comment on that. Just commenting on my own experience in the restaurant industry.

Most restaurants are going to have to accept that it's no longer going to be possible to exploit people with wages that barely allow them to scrape by, with little to no benefits. Which given how hard office employers struggle to fight for a "return to office" in the face of the people who would actually have to return to those offices resistance, is highly unlikely.

I don't think that's normal. Cooks probably would make $13-$17/hr anywhere, but I don't know about $25/hr equivalent with tips for wait staff. It's pretty standard across the board for wait staff to get paid $4/hr because their employers KNOW they get by with their tip money.

Remove all sit down services. (carry out only)

Eliminate waiters and waitresses

Max of 2-3 employees to work a handout window and kitchen.

Source your product from the cheapest possible place and stretch it.

Crank those prices up.

Have a simple menu that allows you to premake some items to save time and push service.

$25/hr+ is including tips. I was thinking about this a while ago (envy is an ugly thing) and came up with rough estimates of average shift length, average customers/day, and average tips/customer for the current restaurant I work in and it worked out to about $28-$29/hour, with some give or take here and there depending on who has the better shifts. I don't mean to imply that my experience is universal, but I really began to question my life choices after busting my ass for 5+ years in the industry and watching some rando 20-year-old come in and make 50+% more than me despite having no earthly idea what she was doing. My experience both irl and on reddit is that there are a lot of people in similar positions who feel the same way.

Pulling up bootstraps originated as a euphemism for an impossible task.

It's interesting that it evolved to you're not working hard enough.

-Better pay
-Better sick leave policies and sick pay
-More vacation time
-POS systems that actually function
-More ability to deal with troublesome costumers at the employee and store level
-Ability to label items out of stock at the store level for online orders
-No delivery services OR manadatory tipping of staff for said orders and no special requests at all for delivery.
-Not deliberately running staffing as short as possible when there actually is staffing
-Stable scheduling and none of this "Okay you get 10 a week except when we randomly give you 60 hours but we cleverly arrange it so despite working 7 9 hour days in a row you still don't get overtime pay"
-Job expectations stay stable without shifting dramatically or trying to have you encompass multiple roles at once
-Air conditioning/heating actuslly fucking wotks including in the kitchen.
-Breaks are a thing and not just a myth but aren't used as an anti overtime/hour minimizing bludgeon

Not stealing tips

In all honesty fast food will probably no longer be hiring anyone in 20-30 years.

Once they make robots that can prepare food, the only people they will hire will be overseers, maintenance workers, and janitors.

It'll no longer be a job for highschoolers and people struggling.
