Honestly some just don't have the means to leave the country i guess. Like the island countries of east and southeast asia get hit annually by them typhoons (hurricanes). They should migrate over to places that don't have storms like west coast USA

Oh wait that place has earthquakes. Well they will find a suitable country if they have the means for travel. I'm too lazy to designate disaster-free countries for them atm and I'm also on my phone

i feel for the folks who were born in those areas, because relocating is expensive and difficult. but why in the world would anyone make a conscious effort to move to an area that gets decimated by nature almost every year?

I would rather live in a hurricane prone area then live in the Rust Belt. Yes, it's that bad lol.

Do you make a lot of money in that low cost of living area? If the pay is shit. Gives me another reason not to live out there.

this

making good money in the midwest is easily the best realistic option

i say realistic because i'm assuming nobody on CE is making the requisite $500k to make living in LA/SF/etc. even remotely palatable

shrug. i dont have any basis of comparison b/c i've lived here my whole life, but Columbus is the 13th largest city in the US and we have a lot of stuff going on. it's not like all of Ohio is rural farmland. most major touring acts come through here and if not here, they hit Cleveland or Cincinnati.

Please don't trigger me with a city limit population statement. Columbus is not the 13th largest city in the country, please quit lying to yourself before you make yourself look silly.

exactly. our exact # on the list is wholly irrelevant to the point im making here. the point is that we're a sizable city with plenty of interesting stuff to do. it's also easy to travel anywhere in the east or south.

there hasn't been a natural disaster in central Ohio since i've been alive. the closest thing we've had was a gigantic blizzard in '78 (i was not alive yet) that hit most of the midwest. there's been an occasional small tornado touchdown (none in central Ohio, but surrounding areas), but nothing like what they get in the central plains

seems like the "disaster prone" areas are:

South / SE - hurricanes / floods
middle plains - tornados
California - earthquakes
East cost - hurricanes / floods, but not nearly as bad as the south/south-east

1) Because most places on earth have some sort of disaster anyway.
2) Some people just can't afford to move easily, especially in this awful housing economy.
3) Some people might like living there much of the year.
