IIRC didnt he literally do this because he had mistakenly said it was heading toward Alabama and instead of saying whoops, my bad, Alabama is fine he took a damn sharpie to the map lol

Correct. Being the alpha that he is, he could never admit mistakes, so decided to shaprie the hurricane into another state. Also, being the very free thinking individuals that they are, his base parroted his line of reasoning.
