Oh yeah this shit sucks. It makes the village dialogue writing flow a little better but the hit to the gameplay isn't worth it.

As for which characters to use, one hint I'll say is that FE6 was originally a remake of FE1 -- so characters like Dieck map fairly straightforwardly to Ogma, etc. But for the most part you can make anyone work on normal difficulty.

FE6 has the largest cast of any of the GBA games. So you don't need to worry too much about fresh blood. On the other hand, if it is a requirement that your new characters be good... well, if even Dieck doesn't meet your standards, then you may have trouble filling out a team.

Dieck I don't mind, I just wasn't feeling the axe users, but they're the strongest people on the team right now by far.

FE6 is the last game for a long time where swords aren't outright bad weapons, and it's in large part due to the fact that they're practically the only thing that can actually hit anything sometimes.

Yeah the lances aren't having the best luck either, I've never missed this mutch. I think there was only one time ever in 11 or 12 where I missed on an 80 or above, and I don't think I ever saw my own accuracy drop below a 60 even in the worst circumstances.

On another note, though I did get used to it.....it's still nuts how much better these GBA games look than the DS ones.

The DS games use formulas for hit and avoid that make your stats have much less impact on the final hit rate than in other games in the series, so weapon hit stats and weapon rank bonuses are much more important. You can still end up with some accuracy issues on some of the less accurate weapons vs faster enemies, but if you don't play on higher difficulties you won't necessarily notice it as much (notably in FE12 the Wyrmslayer and Dragonpike tend to want some hit forged on them because a lot of their targets have high avoid, especially the Wyverns, and base 70 hit only goes so far). That said the RNG itself is effectively the same so you're not any more or less likely to miss attacks at any given displayed hit.

I beat FE1.

Shout-out to the final chapter for spawning 3 of my units in a death trap that was nearly impossible to get them out of without losing at least one.

One day, inevitably, I will give actual FE1 a shot.

Took a quick glance at the portraits for recruitable units with a friend over Discord, and am sad to find that two of the ones I am most interested in are apparently among the worst units in all of FE, purple hair dark magic girl and pink hair knight girl.

I wouldn't put Wendy among the worst units ever. I used her just fine in my lone FE6 playthrough! People just don't like her cause she doesn't fit the normal knight mold.

Wendy/Gwendolyn (Knight) - If you put in the painstaking effort to catch Wendy up on levels and promote her, then she does wind up with decent stats. Objectively not worth the effort, but you are under no obligation to play objectively, and whether you can tolerate babying units or not is your call. There is one amusing mechanic to note: Bors, Wendy, and the third Knight have a Triangle Attack.

Sophia (Shaman) - I seem to recall that someone on the 3H board did a "Bad Units Only" run where they dumped all their stat boosters into Sophia, enabling her to go crazy with Nosferatu. If the idea amuses you, start stockpiling them boosters, 'cause Sophia ain't gonna redeem herself.

Yeah, I used Gwendolyn during my FE6 run and she turned out fine. She does need to be carried early on for exp.

I don't think I bothered with Sophia because by the time I got her Raigh was good enough.

Chapter 5 completed. Finally starting to feel like I've got some power.

I'm hoping this bow girl is better than what's his name, it's always my Fire Emblem policy to bit use the first archer because they're a loser nerd, at least in the ones I've played so far.

I mean, she dies in one round to most enemies on her join map while doing bad damage at low hit rates and it doesn't get better from there without feeding her everything just to become the bare minimum of functional and she's in a game that sucks for knights in general and joins right before a stretch where she's at weapon triangle disadvantage against everything, and even when trained she literally never becomes anything other than a generic decent combat unit but with less move. If she's not among the worst units ever there's not really anyone that is unless you really narrow "worst units ever" down to like, 3 people or something.

But she's cute, and that's what matters!

I stole everythiiiing on this God damn map, tool forever. Also was a nightmare but I was able to level both the new archer and the horse bow girl to 5 in the process.

I really do like the newer FE games quite a bit, but it's a very different feeling to be able to get a sense of accomplishment in something as simple as gaining enough levels in a map to make a new character viable. In the last few games I've played, I could barely care less about what level my units were, anything in the ballpark was fine, and I could just grind if it were a problem.

Chapter 6 can really drag when you want everything. Probably the worst part about FE6 map design is how bloated some of the indoor maps can get.

Haven't decided which Christmas unit to stick with yet. Allen is falling behind pretty hard in speed compared to Lance.

Dorothy and Sue are both better than Wolt, but that's not saying much. They can be servicable until the better bow users join, but that's the best you can hope for them. Plus, there's a very good reason not to use both Sue and the second nomad, and since he's better most people just use him.

I hope at least one of my favs actually stands the test of quality. I have faith in the red Wyvern Knight as always!

Just for the sake of some background noise at work is there a, like...well known/out in front Fire Emblem youtuber for stuff like analysis or just any series discussion in general?

Everything was going fine and I had dudes set up at the bottom for reinforcements.

...I did not expect 6 fucking reinforcement from the top of the screen next to the boss.

Thank God for the savestates I have here, it took 17 ATTEMPTS to get out of that mess, especially since I hadn't actually recruited the green units yet and they were AI-ing themselves into suicide against the boss, who SURE CAN CRIT A LOT FOR A 3% CRIT RATE.

The puzzle of rescuing units and trading weapons all in this 9x9 area is the most stressed I've ever been in an FE game.

Also gotta say....

This is honestly why I love FE6. It feels very puzzle-y compared to other FEs. (Not as much as Vestaria Saga though!)

If you're exclusively attacking people you average sub-50% hit on, you're not doing fine

Once she's leveled up she'll have like a 65% hit rate with Flux. Hard to beat that! And every now and then she can even double a particularly slow enemy. Too OP pls nerf

(If it wasn't obvious this is all tongue in cheek, though I really would rather use Sophia than several other FE6 characters)

Yeah this! I love using Nino and the trainees are fun too. There have been like...2 or 3 units I've never used in FE7 and 2 of those join so late that they don't really count imo. I trained up Ashe in Houses too!

The problem with Sophia is that even if you train her up, she's about the same as Raigh, who already isn't very good despite joining at a decent level a few chapters earlier. It's honestly amazing that it took until Awakening for a playable dark mage that's actually good as a dark magic user.

People meme about Tharja being popular for....statues, but she kicked and had some serious ass!

Almost done with work an I've got 5 days off for constant FE.

Is FE Warriors 1 any good at all from a fanservice perspective? I know people typically say the game isn't great as a Warriors game on the whole, but they never really talk about the FE side.

I haven't played FEW1 myself but from what I've seen the "fanservice" feels pretty limited to the same three games IS was pushing unbelievably hard in everything else at that time. (Shadow Dragon, Awakening and Fates) So I'm not sure there's too much to be said for wider series fanservice there.

FEW1 is fine. It's not a bad game, its just not a really good game either.

I had to promote Allen at level 10 mid battle with the Knight Crest from the chest to beat the boss of Chapter 8...didn't plan will for that.

At least I got Lilana to level 6!

Alright...so this is very wierd...

I started 8x, realized I forgot to give Sue the longbow which was going to have a noteable impact on my first turn. I notice this after Allen did a 1 turn KO on a 20 HP Mercenary, exactly 20 damage. No big deal, I reset put the bow on, start again.

Now Allen suddenly only does 19 damage with the same weapon?? Did equipping Sue with the longbow have some kind ripple effect on the math??

I would assume you reset the map and the enemy rerolled higher Defense.

That's something they can do? I had no idea there was any sort of randomization there!.. Cleared 8x, I am just having a HELL of a time beating boss units. I feel like 90% of my Arsenal goes 0-2 damage, and they can OHKO most units.

GBA FEs have randomized enemy stats. There's some kind of filter on it that keeps them from drifting too far from their averages, mind.

Did you get the Light Brand from, I think it's Chapter 8? In FE6, its ranged attack does a fixed 10 damage per hit, which is pretty useful against tanky bosses.

Edit: Another helpful trick is Rescue/Drop. Like, if the boss has a melee weapon and a ranged weapon, snipe at them with mages/etc when they have the melee weapon out, then Rescue your frail units to get them out of range and Take/Drop them so they can do the same next turn. If there's no one in range to hit, the boss won't change weapons, so you can keep plinking away.

Yeah the Light Brand is how I beat him, didn't realize the 10 damage was set, though makes sense why it was doing so much more damage than my mage. Makes me feel a lot better but using up so much of it if it's going to be a fixed 10 and get worse as time goes on.

I'll have to keep the rescue method in mind if it happens again.
