The Japanese did it many years ago, getting there first with, iirc, Hayabusa. Even a few years ago (2018) Osiris Rex managed this (I know a few people who worked on that project as it was built here in Tucson). In fact, the sample from that mission is expected to return in 2023 then the craft will go on to explore Apophis which may actually be a threat to Earth.

they're seeing if the orbit of the moon changes and how much

Yeah, it's more of a, "Let's measure how much we can alter an asteroid's trajectory like this in the event that we actually need to do that in the future." Which I mean, we pretty much will eventually unless we go extinct first.
