Shopping alone in public when you know you have these triggers is clearly a terrible way to avoid them. It doesnt matter if you dont know all of your triggers. If there is a chance this can happen then you need to prepare around the possibility of it

what is even the trigger here? People talking to her? Men talking to her?

there are hundreds or maybe thousands of chances she was spoken to before this happen, by women, men, kids, elders and pretty much everyone. How did she make it this far without an episode like this?

if the guy had touched her (which doesnt add up, like someone else explained it above) that would still not change things, you know how many people bump into people or accidentally touch others, or even on purpose (hey, mam, you dropped a dollar , hey, miss, whats the time? , etc) in a crowded place such as a supermarket everyday?

Why is it always the guy fault. Hell he did a good thing by leaving. I kind of think he should have stayed if he did nothing wrong. Shit like that get people killed.

I didnt mean that its the guy's fault. He did ok considering the average reactions from Americans. Shes clearly the one at fault. Just saying that theres most likely something very serious going on with her and would get nowhere trying to reason and would make it worse. Better to leave it to staff.

privilege is intersectional and contextual.

while male privilege permeates most situations out there and affects women quite consistently (the topic in CE where women mention that most, if not all women have been groped is a sad example), being a male when someone else is screaming he touched me and rape!! (While she didnt say he did the latter, that word was used in the exchange) is not exactly a good thing or a privilege-bringer, it makes the situation all the more dangerous for the person in the receiving end.

he is lucky to not be a minority (again, remember emmet till) in this case, but he is far from being privileged.

Christ, its amazing how fucked up some people can get. The whole he touched me thing has me thinking shes possibly a horrible person on top of that, but could give some benefit of the doubt that its just a gross defense mechanism. Regardless, definitely needs to fine some help.

It sounds like she threw things either out of his cart or things he placed on the counter.

I doubt all he was buying was some bat wings.

My issue with folks who suffer from mental health issues is that being an asshole and having mental issues are not mutually exclusive.

Its possible to have trauma and have unknown triggers while still being a decent human. Tossing his stuff and screaming over staff trying to help you is not acceptable. And its ugly for folks to expect the guy whos stuff was thrown to just go to another lane. Thats unreasonable.

No. Its unreasonable to try to reason with people who cant reason. Thats the main problem. He couldve been the chilliest, nicest person ever and she was still going to scream and throw a tantrum. Best you can do is retire yourself from the situation.

The reason I believe her is because I've worked with SA victims who have talked about how grocery shopping can trigger their PTSD. People are walking around and near them. The victims themselves try to keep in their bubble remaining aware and unaware of the people around them.

This can happen, but everyone's experiences are going to differ. I've (sadly) known several women who've been sexually assaulted, and they only ever told people they absolutely trusted, they didn't scream it at the top of their lungs in Walmart. Just sayin'.

Reminds me of the huge fate lady screaming F bombs at anybody near her at a Walmart I went to. It's so sad when people behave this way and seriously needs help.

I was gonna say this if I hadn't come into the topic so late. I probably wouldn't but I didn't grow up with such things handy on me at all times so I really don't think about that once in a situation.
