Uh, it definitely did for the late 90s.

Spyro and even Gex did open world better than Mario 64 and Ill die on that hill.

Games that followed the Crash model tended to be worse than those that copied Mario imo.

Spyro was definitely better than SM64, but Crash and Gex were mediocre.

The game that comes to mind when I think of games that copied/were inspired by Crashs gameplay is Sly Cooper 1 and that game is fantastic

What. They all control fine to me. Mario does have much tougher platforming tho so felt it was less responsive till I looked up a speedrun and saw mario's true capabilities

It's wild to me that both Spyro and Crash followed the "just add more and more shit". Model for their sequels.

From skateboarding Spyro to Coco on a tiger, it's just sorta strange that both series went that route.

Hmm, I had a 64 and a ps1 ps1 was for rpgs, armored code, and ace combat.

Anything else that actually required finesse or control was far better on n64.

You guys remember trying to play 2.5D games with a fuckin d-pad?

Crash 1 doesnt have the tightest controls but is very forgiving if you slightly miss your jump.

Future games have tighter controls, and I actually use the dpad for those because it is more precise. TBH that is one reason why Crash should have defined the genre. Crash is more about platforming whereas SM64 and games like it are more about exploring and collecting key items

A remaster of this with some of the wonkier animal controls/bugs patched out would be great tbh.

The problem here is that Bug! on the Sega Saturn did 3D before any of them, so even if Mario 64 didn't ever get made, Crash would STILL just be following in the footsteps of its predecessors.
