it seems that cancelling is really more of an advertisement than an actual thing. For instance trump is cancelled yet I still see his msgs, status updates, opinions. Is he cancelled or just more exclusive?

Andrew Tatethis repugnant scumbag, the first thing I heard about him was he was cancelledand since then my youtube has been exploding with videos about him. Facebook tells me his every thought and manuever. the cancelling seemed to be the advertisement campaign. I think only sex offenders/abusers/assualters get cancelled Cosby & Weinstein vanished.

Cancelling someone is basically just a new term for "I don't like that guy/girl, and you shouldn't either".

No one actually gets cancelled.

Canceling is more an attempt to get sponsors to understand what thru stand for and to drop their influence.

For example. Roseanne Barr. She's basically persona non grata in Hollywood because of things she said in support of Trump.

People still like Roseanne Barr. They'll still watch reruns of the show.

But the people that have successfully "cancelled" her, as in getting her fired from her job and basically kicking her out of Hollywood, were doing it because she said things they didn't like. So instead of just ignoring it, they made her lose her job.

We can argue whether or not it was justified, but you can't deny the people doing the "call to cancel" are doing it out of hatred.

Cancelling is to ruin a person's reputation to the extent that they can no longer find work. Like when an actor gets cancelled, studios distance themselves from them so they don't lose revenue due to their association with them. Gina Carano was a good example. Disney got rid of her and now the only work she can get is alt right crap.

Like I originally said, no one is ever actually gets cancelled, it's just a term people use when someone says or does something they don't like, so they don't support them anymore, and calls for others to follow.

It was never about canceling, it was about punishing, and there is literally no other way for "the people" to punish those they don't like than getting them fired.

If that's all it was it wouldn't be much of a problem, but the tolerant left will take things much further and dox/threaten/harass people they think should be cancelled.

Cancelling is just a modern buzzword for something people have always done when a public figure or company does something they don't like

The only person I can think of who has actually been "canceled" successfully is Milo Yannoupolous. They kicked him off everything and he sorta just fizzled out. But after that, the people who like these people will just go out of their way to find them.

Agreed. And that was kinda the point I was making in my original post.

No one really gets "cancelled". You may get deplatformed, like Trump did on Twitter. Or you lose an acting gig, like Roseanne or Gina Carano. But for the most part, the call to cancel someone is really just someone saying "I don't like this person, and you shouldn't either!"

This is interesting, because I'm pretty sure there is a certain demographic called "Twitter/Tumblr" who will disagree with you, and think that bigots should face far, far more severe consequences. Or think that they "had it coming".

I also don't know why you're implying that they're stupid if they think you, a random Internet person, approve of death threats. Like, anyone and everyone here can easily suspect you of that.

Trump is a unique exception, Trump is political and was previously president. This isn't the same thing, but this take will be accepted regardless.

It goes further than this. Getting you fired from your job, losing your friends, reputation, etc. There's more to this that I've seen over the years.

Cancelling, at it's core, is actively attempting to punish, or get rid of (via deplatforming and/or anything else), someone for beliefs social media does not agree with, whether those beliefs be right or wrong. That is what it means at it's core. There are some people who are upset at cancelling for the wrong reasons, but I don't want anyone denying the active efforts (Hashtags, calling people or companies associated with them and demanding that they be removed, etc) made to get rid of someone by social media because "they can't be allowed to have any kind of platform or success until they do what we want".

Actions and words should have consequences. Screaming cancel culture shows how privileged you are.
