If he were still alive it would be so easy for him to meme himself and get that sweet sweet resurgence in popularity that other old celebs have enjoyed. He could literally just read anything while the theme plays

Well, of course cigarettes were obviously the main theory, but not all of the victims smoked. Several cases happened in front of witnesses. In most cases it was only the victims burnt with little to no damage to the furniture around them. Most of them had appendages left, such as only their feet. They had a video trying to recreate a scenario using a pig carcass, but were unable to burn just the carcass without burning the surrounding area. Thats all I can remember, but this was many moons ago. It was interesting to say the least.

It was a CIA misdirection tactic. Convince the world that people can just catch on fire randomly, then you can kill people by igniting them and no one will question it.

But they found better ways to secretly murder people (or just stopped caring if people knew it was murder) and moved on, so the topic died out.

I skimmed the article and the coroner said it wasn't supernatural. He said there was some ignition cause but the destruction had destroyed what set off the fire

There is no evidence that a human can just erupt in flames for no reason. Everything has a reason

To answer the topic question...
SHC has been mentioned from time to time since 1746.
In the early 1980s, science investigator Joe Nickell and forensic analyst John F. Fischer did a big research report based on 30 historical cases, and their lengthy, two-part report was published in the journal of the International Association of Arson Investigators as well as part of a book. Nickell has written frequently on the subject, appeared on television documentaries, conducted additional research, and lectured at the New York State Academy of Fire Science at Montour Falls, New York, as a guest instructor.
This, and the ones in This Is Spnal Tap, created an interest that grew bigger in the 90s.

I remember seeing pictures and admit I was afraid it would happen to me someday. To this day it still baffles me how some people could burn up completely literally leaving nothing behind, yet their surroundings was not affected. Doesn't it take a high ass temp to burn up a body completely.

Basically the clothing of the victim soaks up melted human fat and acts like the wick of a candle. This is called the Wick Effect.
The fire is pretty tiny and fire hates to move horizontal so it stays on the body, just like how a fire stays on a candle.
