Pretty much the only starter I can think of that is bad against essentially every gym leader

It's bad in every other game too.

Using Chikorita felt like quite the uphill battle. Still love my little flower dino tho

It's hard to imagine a starter being any worse than Chikorita. They practically went out of their way to ensure it faces bad match ups at nearly every turn.

Same. Might take a little longer to kill stuff at worst. The main campaign in Pokemon games has next to no difficulty to speak of.

It is mechanically the weakest starter in the whole series, unless it got usurped by one of the new ones.

Body Slam paralysis spam is a start.
It'll probably be nice to resist Miror B's whole gameplan and probably a bunch of Venus' and Ein's.
I can already visualize that Entei landing one good fire blast though.

Feraligatr is a worse Gyara, minus 4x Electric weak.
Typhlosion is a worse Charizard, even has the exact same stats, minus 4x Rock weak. Moltres also kicks his ass and is a legitimately great pokemon (in GSC).
Meganium at least has a niche in GSC with its support role. It can also run an awkward SD set with EQ and Body Slam.

Meganium is very oddly the best one, competitively... at least in GSC. I think evaluated without context, it could be the worst, but given the GSC meta the other two have too much competition AND counters. Meganium can actually get in, set up a Reflect/Light Screen, Leech Seed, and help set up Marowak or Curselax.
It's absolutely the worst choice as a starter and, IIRC, GSC wild pokemon are pretty garbage until you get to Red Gyarados or get Mareep to level 30.

Is Chikorita equally bad in Heart Gold/Soul Silver?

Chikorita gets Sword's Dance as an eggmove in Crystal. Meganium has 80 base speed though it could work.

Defensive play is kind of pointless in the single player because STAB+SE produces x3 damage and you can just set up or use the Shift battle option to guarantee that multiplier.

Grass in general is a pretty bad typing, likely the worse even. Poor thing never stood a chance.

Looking at the gym leaders, the first two have type advantages. Third gym is neutral, but Miltank needs to go down fast before rollout gets to strong. Fourth is another type disadvantage. In the fifth gym Chikorita finally gets a type advantage against one of the leaders pokemon. Sixth gym has both the gym leader and Chikorita doing not very effective damage. Seventh gym both hit each other for supper effective damage. Eighth gym is more type disadvantage. The elite four has a lot of grass resistance. Besides Brock Chikorita doesn't fare any better in Kanto.

TL;DR Pure grass type is shit in gen 2.

I already know grass is bad in Johto, I lived that life my dude, I was asking about competitive play mainly.

pure grass is shit in general, 5 weaknesses, ice, fire, bug, flying, poison, all of which have rather common moves found on a lot of pokemon like aerial ace, flamethrower, x-scissor, sludge bomb, ice beam ect, poor stat distribution, The chikarita line especially can't really do anything but try and be below average screen setter, toxic, leech seed spammer, they lack the attack or special attack to slug it out with anything, i swear there's always one crappy starter, one mediocre starter and one powerful one everybody uses, especially noticeable starting with gen 4 and flat out done on purpose by gen 6, greninja got all that stuff, Incinaroar is such an annoyance it's hijinks alone caused a long time ability to get nerfed, Gen 8 however was a plot twist, at first it looked like Cinderace was the strong mon but then Rillaboom out paced it heavily.

If i were a betting human I'd throw my lot in with the weed cat of gen 9 being to strongest with the duck being the weakest

And this being after Bulbasaur rekt RB (not Y since Pika is the starter)

I've gone fire ever single generation (exclusion of X and Y as I haven't played those games) except for Gen 2 where I went Totodile. Totodile is the best non fire starter. I'll probably go Grass for gen 9 though if I do get it. For once, I don't like the fire starter.
