I don't really agree that it is worth it. One of those black girls could be right now writing a tale about a black princess, a story that takes some elements from Little Mermaid and their own experience, but isn't The Little Mermaid.

This film has deprived the world of that story.

Often it is the lack of things that creates the incentive to create new things, and when that incentive is lost or bastardized, it becomes less likely to lead to quality change.

I'm a big believer in new characters over the altering of others to artificially fit a different mold. The important part is that the capacity and capability to tell these new stories exists and continues to exist regardless of race or any other dividing force.

Black people shouldn't feel they can only identify with black people or white people with white people. i feel like we really need to make race less important

As MLK said, it's the content of the character that matters.
If it's good, the who and what are irrelevant. Elba's Heimdall proved the fuck out of this.
Id love to know how many of the idiots who moaned about Elba being cast as Heimdall before Thor was released really like the character now.

Seriously one of the best characters in MCU

Yes, I 100% agree with this. Which is why I have no problem with the color of The Little Mermaid's skin, but also what bothers me about those reactions. And yes it is a touching reaction, and of course I understand the reasons behind it, and they're very good reasons, but the fact is that those reasons have led to a certain kind of thinking and certain positions that ultimately do more harm than help. And you can call those whatever fancy words you want, but what they really are is quite simply racism, alive and doing very well, thank you.

Representation matters whether it's an original story or remade classic. Black people don't need to create their own of something for it to be valid to black people.

Also, black people have a ton of stories that we create and we dont need to be confined to those. Like shit, Tyler Perry has been creating black stories for decades but when shit like this comes out the racists always say "why cant they create their own". WE HAVE BEEN.

It decreases the likelihood of such a creation, yes. I literally give the reasoning for said belief in a part of my post you conveniently cut out. Let me post the whole thing again so you can give it another try.

Many writers and directors openly say that it was the lack of something that encouraged them to pursue what they did in film.

While I have no problems with black Ariel I don't understand why it is a big deal for even little black girls. It shouldn't matter if characters "look like them".

It's different when actual culture is being displayed like Encanto, Princess and the Frog or Mulan but if we are just talking about skin color?? Shouldn't really matter.

Because when you see people that look like yourself doing things on a grand stage of things it makes you feel like you can do those things.

There's studies about how young black girls see themselves as lesser because of how the media portrays them.

You're still wrong.

I'm going to use an example of Captain America. Having Sam be captain america isnt replacing a white captain america and we dont need a new captain america.

It's a title and it shows that ANY person can be captain america. Like spiderman, like the little mermaid, like the flash, like any other super hero.

It shows that any person of any race can be that character. The reason that movies like Encanto, Raya, Shang Chi, Black Panther, Little Mermaid matter is because it shows young kids that you're equal. Maybe in the real world there's still racism but letting the kids dream bigger and forget about that stuff helps in the long run. It's why there's so much more tolerance in the world today.

Maybe its not 100% gone but every little step in the right direction helps.

I did. Almost every video game I played growing up was a white dude in his 30-40s.

I had no representation unless it was a black side kick and that was barely a thing.

To this day I still get no representation in character creators but there are 30 versions of an undercut but 2 black haircuts. Afro and Regular corn rows.

Johnny Depp played Tonto. Benedict Cumberbatch played Kahn.
Race is a social construct, get over it, especially for a fictional non-racial character. Maybe Halle Bailey (also thought it was Catwoman) was the best audition, she certainly sounds better than Emma Watson.

BTW, have HHH tagged for previously posting race-bait stuff.

tbh I don't think it's even that considering stuff like Encanto being a mega hit. I don't really care much about the race switch, but this whole remake situation just feels like it's moreso to cash in old stuff+hollywood's dumb stigma against animation.

Its absolutely a cost cutting measure. They dont have to write a new story or design new characters when they do remakes. That means they dont have to hire writers or as many designers etc. they can also cash in on nostalgia for a bit of free marketing.
