It's crazy to think Berserk is older than me and still isn't finished. I got into it just a couple years ago because I saw the crazy rape scene on FB since someone posted it in anime group I'm in. I sent it to my friend and was like "Bro....WTF IS THIS SHIT?!?!" And he was just all casual and like "Oh, that's Berserk. Bro it's sooo good. Dark and fucked up, but good. You gotta get into it."...took his word for it by watching the Golden Age Arc movies on Netflix. Was pleasantly surprised. I then watched the 90s cartoon and then the 2016.

The Beast of Darkness eats from within. Just what is this mysterious element of Berserk? A manifestation of the Brand? Just a figment of his conscience? Or is it something more sinister? New chapters may shed light on what the Beast of Darkness is, and carry it into new stories in new ways, evolving its depiction, or combining it with elements already present. For example, the Berserker armor, where this accumulation of rage and death appears to consume Guts entirety. Could it in fact be the malice of the people Guts who has killed, gnawing at him, and threatening to pull him to hell? Or is this frightening animal Guts's true strength?

Each scar on Guts's body tells a tale. When we first meet Guts in Golden Age, he's in near perfect condition and over the course of the manga, we get to see how Guts became the Black Swordsman we met in the beginning. Every wound you see Guts take in combat seals up to become another addition to his vast collection of bodily and spiritual scars.

The circumstances surrounding his birth along with pretty standard Berserk lore suggest a deeper albeit potentially dreadful truth. Or, could there be an unseen ray of hope lining the strings that attach him to the flow of fate?

I first found Berserk some time between Dark Souls I ,& II tho I do suspect I had run into it or its influence once or twice before. A trailer or two, or maybe I saw an episode when I was way young, etc. So, maybe 2013.

Hard to believe it's already been 10 years....

I can't tell what the memorial edition is. Might be loaded with goodies, like a behind the scenes special, or remastered and featuring touched up animation, sound, etc. I didn't check to see if it's in 4K or anything. Arguably the definitive edition of Berserk? The Golden Age is really amazing, deep, and utterly compelling anime for fans interested in the philosophies of fighting. Definitely picking this one up.

At first I was a little skeptical of the Berserker armor, but IMO it really came into its own during the Sea God arc which I know I've mentioned a feww times already. Like, it just seemed to me that it never quite lived up to the art concepts as far as the actual story sequences panned out or whatever, but if it all lead up to finally seeing it cut 100% loose during Sea God, I think it's all worth it. And in retrospect I greatly enjoy the armor as a whole. It was not overused, and quickly fulfilled its potential, imo, with tons of promise for future developments involving the armor, which I also touched on earlier.

If I happen to still have your attention, please consider checking out one of Miura's other manga- Gigantomakia, if you haven't already. It's a mini-series, but greatly enhanced my appreciation for Berserk ^.^ They're kind of completely different, but sometimes a little contrast can be clarifying. Duranki on the other hand challenged me as a reader. Those are the only 3 I've read from Miura though. But yeah....

There's still plenttyyyy to talk about here. @GTurtlte is right! Let's keep it alive at least a little longer, if anything is on anyone's mind

I think the two main talking points about Griffith are 1.) would he have joined the God Hand if he hadnt been broken & tortured, and was still royalty in Midland, and 2.) Is Guts seeking revenge on Griffith or is he actually still competing and jealous as ever?

Little afterthoughts about Griffith include the fate stuff, political fiction, his manipulation of souls in Falconia, and creating "peace"(?) between apostles and humans, and of course always wondering whether what Griffith is doing is evil! Haha not to mention Guts

I think Griffith tends to make people second guess themselves and that's part of what makes him a great character

The thing about Griffith. Is that he believes what hes doing is right and a just cause

he starts out a peasant mercanary. Whores himself for gold as to build his army not sacrifice them for a fools errand then runs into Guts. Who after long freindship tells charlotte theyre not friends. Freinds would question my motives not blindly follow me. To which Guts leaves the band. Which while Griffith didnt know he heard that. Got pissed to wonder why. Then afterwards got broken. Tortured. Then reborn

course its odd. In the OVA. When he offers the behlit he accepts without blinking an eye.

while in the movies its made to where he tries to go back on his offer after what happend but finally accepts the reborn offer

as for Guts wanting revenge. Like in the 2016-2017 when he sees him again. If he showed any sympathy toward the branding of the group. He would have forgiven Griffith. But he didnt. Thats why Guts wants revenge. Not for himself. But for his comrades in arms

Quite honestly, Griffith was "chosen" to become the final member of the God Hand once he came into contact with the Crimson Behelit. He was never not going to end up a demon lord, regardless of whether he'd taken the exact same path. Besides, it wasn't the torture that broke him (well, his spirit; that fugly little gnome quite thoroughly ruined his body) but the feeling of betrayal by Guts, not once, but TWICE. How DARE Guts come back into the picture as Griffith's "savior" just to abandon him again? Being pitied by Casca who once worshipped him didn't help either.

As for Guts' motivation, yes he's driven by revenge but more significantly, like everything in his ENTIRE life, he is driven by a preternatural will to survive, no matter the odds. Guts is a magnet for suffering because of his demon brand but he wasn't exactly living an idyllic life before that either. He was literally born to suffer (remember how he was found beneath a hanging tree full of corpses, including that of his mother whom he was still attached to via umbilical cord?) yet has lived through it all, via his own martial prowess and instinct, opportune interventions by various parties, or sheer dumb luck because that's what he does: he survives. Killing Griffith and thwarting the God Hand is a means of catharsis for the horrors wrought by his former comrade but ultimately it serves the dual purpose of significantly diminishing the number of abhorrently evil things that come after him, Casca, and their allies.

Wouldnt notice a difference other than slightly better detail in the drawings. So better? Its only been a few chapters, can still swing either way but they certainly hit the ground running and didnt hesitate to pump out material with action. Berserk had long dry spells in the story, but the new material hasnt really had a low point yet imo.

Oh I'm sure! I'd actually really like to play something new that does like a Shadow Tower thing. The VR game "In Death" is really really close to something I'd like. Between that and like Call of Duty Zombies (Black Ops etc) but yeah....

Lots on my mind. That's interesting. I've played a few King's Field or Ultima/Doom-inspired dungeon crawlers. Tends to be a lot of fun for me

Shadow Tower has slowly replaced Eternal Ring as my all-time favorite game.

That, and the sequel to Shadow Tower (Abyss). The focus on the monster designs, the bestiary, the item designs (moreso in the original, as the sequel doesn't do quite as much with the bestiary or item artwork), and catch-all story with a strange combo of D&D monsters plus Lovecraft, Oni & Yokai, Disneylike creatures or Fairytale creatures, etc, really wins my heart.

The gameplay is a little more advanced in Shadow Tower, as Eternal Ring mostly just has the ring creation system going for it, and Shadow Tower 2 does an excellent job of combining sword gameplay with shooter gameplay in first-person. Seems like kind of a no-brainer. So yeah...

Kind of has a jungle crawler thing going on at times

Monsters born from dreams and memories of a person is neat, imo. Like a dungeon master. There's a ton of beautiful artwork for the game too. There's just a lot of cool stuff about it. I like the name. I guess they went for more of a Dark Tower thing in the sequel, and in the original it was just like Tower of Babel meets like Sodom and Gomorrah
