Because of the economy. The guy that breaks down consoles talks about how Sony has shrank the console to make it lighter and cheaper. Also, lighter consoles are cheaper to ship. Weight is the big issue for shipping. A console that is over 1 pound lighter really adds up when you are shipping a bunch of them.
