Part of me hates this, part of me loves that it's trolling the art world, another part thinks that it should be considered legitimate art.

User-generated graphic design was a thing 20 years ago when I was in college, and it was pretty sophisticated even back then, yet somehow the graphic design world has not imploded. This sort of thing was completely inevitable, and the dude is right that critics are completely ignoring the human element. Also, the art pieces are gorgeous.

I do think AI-generated art should be in a separate category since it involves a different skill set. But people calling it the death of artistry are being overly dramatic. From what I understand, when someone commissions an artist to create something, they want that piece in that artist's unique style. An AI isn't going to be able to replicate that in a lot of cases. And yes I know there are AIs that accept "in the style of [famous artist]" as a prompt, but it's not going to know someone with a couple thousand Twitter followers.

Sounds like it's a lot more involved than just going to an image generator website and filling in some random prompts; if he put the work and talent in to develop it, it's art. I can't in good conscience label this a cheat with one hand while defending digital art against physical medium purists with the other.

Speaking as a talented artist in both physical and digital media, on an ideal level I don't think the ability to create an accurate visual representation should be restricted to the talented; ai art could be a big step towards the un-talented having the ability to create art.

This. Also people seem to be missing the forest for the trees. There will always be a need for the human element in art. An AI can come up with some interesting and apparently award winning pieces but there are 100s if not 1000s of jobs that only humans can still do. Like creating specific ideas via commission or refining concept art for a movie or a ton of mediums that a computer cant really replicate.

Its going to be a cultural shift but thats happened for hundreds of years. Van Gogh wasnt appreciated in his time. Andy Warhol challenged the very idea of what art is. People thought comics were low art for decades. And those examples are only scratching the surface.

ASCII art has a long history of being moderated for obfuscated and unpredictable reasons. That's why it's dead.

it's not that it's not art, you could easily say it's just an unfair advantage.

chess engines are banned in chess. they are stronger than the strongest players. they, too, use true AI like dall-e, etc.

it's a great picture; they should update their rules to prohibit using AI, and also have a new category for AI-assisted art.

you know nothing about photography. If taking amazing photos was easy everyone would do it. fact it it's not and 99.999% of all the photos uploaded are fucking dogshit and u know it.

art competitions often regulate what categories can and can't use photoshop anyway.

If there was a drawing competition and someone submitted a photo, that'd be "cheating" certainly.

im not suggesting they take away the 1st prize at all, im just suggesting that art competitions either specify if u can use AI, and create a unique category for AI-assisted art. could even create 3 categories:

-Anything goes, digital
-non-AI, digital
-AI, digital

If abstract modern art is art, AI art is art too. These people are just bitter snobs.

AI seems like it can only generate certain type of art anyway? It's all realistic hyper-produced digital art stuff. I don't see painters or sketch artists being threatened

The artist had to come up with hundreds of different parameters and sort through thousands of photos to get the correct amazing photo too.

These same art snobs would also be mad if they found out the Jackson Pollock like painting that won an art show was actually just a 2 year old smearing his poopy diaper on the a canvas.

Remember this guy who was taping bananas to a wall and selling them for $120,000 as art pieces?

Nah, they can do a variety of styles if you stipulate it in the parameters. Though as I said earlier, emulating any one specific artist's style isn't going to work unless they're immensely famous.

Isn't AI trained using art created by humans, and with feedback from many humans? In a sense, AI-generated artwork is like a massive collaboration between countless artists. It eliminates the idea of individual style in the brushwork or other physical signatures of an individual, but it is still very much human in its nature. The individual picture is also generated by an individual human through many refinements of an initial idea, and it would be possible to train a particular AI to prefer to generate pictures of a unique style, representing its trainer as a unique individual. I don't think this is moving towards removing the human element from art.

However, it is very worrisome that it will possibly push some types of human artists out of the labor market by making available a cheap approximation of their work.

No, it generates a new image algorithmically based on what it's been fed. Even If you ask for something specific like Sonic the Hedgehog, you'll get a brand new image of Sonic the Hedgehog that never existed before.
