I don't give a shit about HP or thos game, but it's so dumb when people try to push the responsibility onto the common man and the developers of a game. Harry Potter has taken on a life bigger than it's creator.

The Harry Potter series made xenophobia a progressively more prominent theme as it went on. And while you could argue that centaurs and house elves end up being well-represented in spite of some questionable writing, the goblins are...uh...theyre still in a weird place iirc lol.

So centaurs are painted as largely justified in their assholery, and Dumbledore straight up posits that if Sirius hadnt been a dick to Kreacher, the latter might not have betrayed them. , house elves are also used as a symbol of wizard hypocrisy in the beginning and end of OotP.

But goblins? They're pretty much always presented as shifty. Bill Weasley basically says wizards and goblins cant get along because "cultural differences", and the most sympathetic goblin character is a self-serving sneaky sneak who almost fucks over the heroes, but not before Harry bald face lies to him to get him to help.

Idk what the expanded lore is because I never bothered with Pottermore/whatever it's called now, but in the books.... >_>

Speaking as a Jewish person, I couldn't possibly imagine life if I tried to apply real life issues to every piece of fictional media I consumed. That just does not sound like a fun way to decide what I do or do not play.

If my fellow Jews felt differently, like the person making the reddit post, I would have zero qualm with that. That is their personal choice and I wouldn't force, coerce, or convince them to change their minds. Just as I wouldn't expect them to do the same to me.

Play it if you want. Or don't. It's up to you.

Funny enough, the anti-drug campaigns like D.A.R.E are actually paid for by large cigarette companies. This probably explains why the anti-drug commercials you see are cringey as fuck. What better way to advertise your shit other than making the other side look like dorks. Afterall, cigarette companies are not even legally allowed to make commercials for their products anymore either.

I wasn't planning on buying it because I haven't cared about Harry Potter since the 7th book came out but now that I've been told not to I'm reconsidering

Yeah same too. If people didn't complain about this game, I may not have even paid it any attention. Also, I got a powerful PC, so I am curious how it can handle it.

I'm going to guess the person who wrote that review only watched the movies, since the goblin "uprising" was a prominent part of at least two books and a fairly major character motivation for Hermione that was stripped from the movies to streamline things. It was also ended through dialogue and a recognition that the goblins were being treated poorly, leading to improved working conditions and more rights for the goblins.

Those were house elves, which are entirely different from goblins.

It is somewhat different in Rowling's case given she is using her wealth and influence to strip the rights from minorities and her words are being used by lawmakers in UK and America to ensure Trans people are no longer seen as people.

I'm still hoping that the goblin thing will be subverted in the story and they'll actually address it. The fact Rowling isn't involved in the writing makes me think this is a genuine possibility

But yeah, Rowling's writing is pretty cowardly in spots. I don't know why she introduces systemic issues then refuses to even really address them.

Thats fair enough in terms of spending money on it to play it (which I wont). But they are also making the argument to not play it at all even if you can do so for free

Yeah the idea is great. A wizard school game in general could be very fun and whimsical. But the execution here is so dull. I can't see the gameplay footage and say that it looks anything more than just serviceable.

I have never read any of the books or seen the movies, and I didn't really care about the game when it was announced, but all this whining about Harry Potter in general and J.K. Rowling specifically, makes me want to play the game just to see how much these people will whine even more.
