i remember i started with charmander and got destroyed by brock. Then I tried squirtle and couldn't get past misty. Ended up using bulbasaur and wrecking those 2 bullies

Ember doesn't do too bad against Brock, but usually I just level my Butterfree up to having Confusion and fuck up his team with that

Brock and misty (and therefore the rest of the game) were a fuckin breeze

And here I thought I over leveled by getting Charmeleon.

I picked Squirtle as my first starter back then so Brock was easy, and I made it past Misty just fine by teaching Wartortle Mega Punch. By the time I ever played through the game with Charmander, I learned enough about the game that I knew to raise a Butterfree and beat Brock with Confusion.

i picked charmander but i didnt switch, i honestly dont remember how i beat brock or misty because that's ages ago

i do remember i taught charmander the HM cut (gg lmao) and later on got rid of the move rage when i saw how trash it was and my older neighbor was like "you got rid of rage??? that's one of the best moves in the game!" lol

Nah even as a kid I usually over leveled a bit, ember took Brock down just fine.

I'm a big Bug and Bird pokemon fan. So, I always had Butterfree early on to rock the gym. Love that bugs grow so fast.

I remember grinding as a kid in that early area only leveling charmander until I passed.

Onix has shit Special Defense, ember does decent damage to it

No, but I knew many people who started out with Chikorita and switched because most of the gym leaders shit on grass types.

I cant remember, but I know you can get Nidoran almost instantly. Nidoran with Double Kick was my go-to, as I remember.

i just ended up raising it to a charmeleon then fighting brock.

i was the kinda kid who would keep using the same shit rather than play smarter.

I think ember helps, especially when you press B really hard so that it does more damage (also increases odds of inflicting burn status)

But my first time playing pokemon, I kept losing to misty, was stuck on her forever. Tried every strategy I could think of (which isn't a lot) and one time I got close with an ekans using wrap on her.

Because of her I realized that overleveling makes the game breezy. When my charmeleon learned slash... it was like goku coming out of the hyperbolic time chamber. I came back to the gym strutting the whole way. Slash is always a critical hit in gen 1, and it remained my favorite move of all time (little did I know that in only 3 meager levels, I was about to receive the greatest pokemon of all)

Not in the original R/B, only in Yellow version. Yellow also made Nidoran available before Brock and moved Double Kick to much earlier in Nidoran's moveset to provide another option for Brock. The FR/LG remakes kept Mankey before Brock and the Double Kick change for Nidoran, but didn't let you catch Nidoran until after Brock.

Ember solos. Second playthrough I ended up catching a Mankey and did work.

Just play the FireRed version instead. Charmander learns Metal Claw fairly early on, and that makes Brock easy peasy.

But that being said, I stuck with Charmander in the original game too. I just used a different strategy. A less effective one.

With yellow all you have to do is teach pikachu surf by beating the entire pokemon stadium with him in the party and having him use it against brock. No fuss, no muss.

Brock is a pushover even with Charmander. His team has no Rock/Ground moves to hit Charmander with, and Onix isnt even a real fight since you're supposed to exploit the delays in Bide. (On top of being a garbage pokemon anyway)

I seriously never understood why anyone thought Brock of all people was supposed to be hard. He's the tutorial boss to make sure you're capable of paying attention to battle beyond mindlessly mashing A >_>

No I picked Squirtle back when I first played Pokmon Red

Years later, into adulthood, I picked Charmander for hard mode

My strategy was always to catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest and then use Thundershock to target the sprinkler system above Onix. Onix is weak to water, you see.

I used potions and would growl when his team used bide.

Like some others, I too would just level up a Caterpie until it becomes Butterfree to easily sweep his team. Like someone else mentioned, Brock didn't actually have any rock moves, so Butterfree could survive their attacks without much of an issue and destroy their weak Special with Confusion.

You could get a lv9 Pidgeotto in Yellow

Pretty sure you can beat the fucker with tackles, scratch and shit if you have enough potions. Tackle from Geodude and Onix were too damn weak lol

Brock was tough but i used a flying type or something

Butterfree w confusion is good for r/b, mankey for yellow

I usually pick squirtle
You can get a bellsprout before misty so you don't need bulbasaur to face her
