Like Fifa, 2k22, etc. They're at a point now where you're just sort of playing an entire game of Fifa and lucky if the sore is 2-0 at the end of it.

Dunno about you guys but all the sports games I loved the most were the whacky as fuck ones. Spacejam for basketball, redcard for soccer, road rash for racing.

And what was that japanese soccer game on the gameboy, where you had special power shots and stuff. that shit was the stuff.

The Mutant League sports games on Genesis were awesome
So was NHL Hitz

I miss NFL Blitz and NHL Hitz.

NFL Blitz and NBA Jam are still my favorite sports games for that very reason.

Slugfest punching was so fun.

The last soccer game I played was PES 2011 and I haven't liked any of them since. That one had its faults but the gameplay clicked with me. I tried playing Fifa and it was unplayable, the players were weirdly both sluggish and floaty? It's difficult to describe

The worst feature ever added for "realism" has to be coach challenges in Madden. There's absolutely no reason for a virtual ref to "make a mistake". I haven't played Madden in a few years so I don't know of that's still a feature.

Agreed, wrestling was hurt the most. trying to make a realistic version of a fake "sport" ruined those games.

I remember playing some soccer game on the Amiga where you could play a match set in WWII with a functioning cartoon bomb standing in for the ball. That shit was fun.

Yeah I dont agree with the realism in sports games too. Turns me off from wanting to play them if I cant pick it up and have fun. I get there is a market for it for people that want to feel like theyre really playing the sport. I just wish there were other options too.

But you can pick one of 3 players for each position: the little guy is super fast but can't hit, the big guy can hit but skates slow, and the middleweight is balanced. Primitive today but advanced for its time.

But the most fun part was the pure gameplay with friends. Ties after 3 periods and it would go to a shootout. Still tied after a shootout? The next round is sudden death....with empty nets!!! I swear this game ruined friendships lol

I disagree with this topic, since ultimate team blew up and became the focus of every sports game, they are all turning into pay to win Gacha RPGs. Nothing realistic about playing nba2k22 against a guy whos running a fully maxed out Bol Bol as a point guard or something

Base Wars on the NES was a baseball game where all the players are Robots and if you get thrown out at a base it turns into a fighting game where the runner can beat the shit out of the fielder to keep the base.

The game was fucking insane and I loved it.

The best football game out right now is Retro Bowl.

The upcoming AEW video game is foregoing realism to be more arcade-y and closer to those N64 wrestling games, so keep an eye on it.

I played the hell out of NBA Street V3 (the one where the Gamecube version had Mario/Luigi/Peach as bonus characters) and SSX Tricky/3. I really miss those.

I still play Baseball Stars 2 for my baseball fix.
