I feel very meh about it. Cell was a great villain because of his cruelty and his composure. He was everything Gohan was not. Cell craved battle and glory while Gohan was peaceful and kind. Cell represented both a physical and ideological struggle for Gohan to overcome. Cell Max was just a monster. A McGuffin for a thirty second payout. He didn't represent anything besides destruction.

Gohan lapsing on his training is an overused plot point now. It happened during the buu saga, it happened with battle of gods, it happened when frieza returned, before the tournament of power, and again in this movie. How it even happened this time is a mystery considering his resolve to become stronger right before he sparred with goku and fought in the tournament. It felt like a huge step back in his character just so they can reuse the same character arc.

And the payoff was lackluster. Final Gohan was on screen for 2 minutes tops. It was good and all, but not worth the buildup. Piccolo had a much better showing, my only complaint is that his power up came from the dragon balls and not from his intense training.

Gamma 1 and 2 were great, by far the best thing about the movie. Cool designs and characters overall. Gamma 2 had so much in common with Sayiaman that I expected Gohan to don his outfit in this movie and have the two personas collide.

I hope that if the Super anime decides to adapt this movie like they did with Battle of Gods and Resurrection F that they take a better approach to the overall arc. And I hope they do, because a lot was crammed into this movie plotwise.

I'd like to see a Gohan who dedicates himself to his training at the cost of his relationship with Videl and Pan, and realizes that he's becoming more like his father and doesn't want that life, but is conflicted because he can't rely on Goku and Vegeta to save him anymore. Maybe it's during his training that Videl/Pan are endangered and he realizes he could have been there to stop the threat if he wasn't with Piccolo. But then it's because of his resolve that he has the strength to defeat the big bad and save his family.

Unlike Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and possibly Broly, this movie and the new stuff in it are officially non-canon.

I will say that canon or not Bulma's ass was the strongest force in that entire movie.

I would have accepted almost any explanation to bring Cell with some amount of his memories back and a grudge, over the mindless Cell Max. Or just some other big bad villain instead.

Those are nothing like the Super situation. DB(Z) always followed the manga with filler being the only difference. The Super manga has completely changed the way events played out putting it in a different timeline entirely.

So why did the Namekians have different amount of fingers?
Why did Goku overpower Frieza in the manga while the fight lasted 19 episodes in the anime?
Why could the manga Future Trunks go SSJ when we first saw his backstory when the anime version couldnt?

Bro you are reaching, none of those are similar to the way the Super arcs differ between anime and manga.

Idk why they decided to give Gohans beast mode or whatever tf its called that comically long hair. Shit looked stupid.

Also hope they use that CGI stuff in the past, Broly animation was so good and they just had to go cheap.

The movie took a lot of risks and that's my favorite thing about it.

It's a Piccolo movie where Gohan is a plot device.

Also, it's #1 in the box office so woohoo!
