Not much to add today. I spent 30 minutes trying to mount a stag. To activate a pad that requires a person riding a stag to be on it (thanks for the tip, very convenient bard song!). But stags have good hearing so even my best stealth boosting item is not enough. I pull it off because eventually one stag spawns at a corner between rocks so I manage to catch it as it tries to run past me. Shrine 29, and a fun little puzzle involving combining bomb, arrow and magnesis done.

I'm one more shrine to 25% of the total.

You know what is not even close to 25%, though? Ancient beasts.

I feel like getting around to that.

I've been stopping whenever I see anything that might look like a korok seed. So far I have around 50.

But I know there are 900 of them and that is enough info to prevent me from actually trying to complete that aspect of the game.

Don't worry, there isn't any incentive to collect all 900. There's only so many to make sure you're likely to find a good amount of them without needing to hunt them thoroughly.

I checked a faq of the shrine I just did out of curiosity to see if there were different solutions.

All faqs are saying Stasis is required to beat the shrine.

No it's not. I just beat it without it. And didn't even take some tricky controlling or glitches, just some thinking.

Guess I was the one who found the different solution.

Bought a house.

I had to shell 3k rupees and a ton of wood. Got it by selling all the stones I have been collecting in shines and stuff. The house is completely empty though, so I had to pay another 300 to get a bed, a front door and some lamps. There are also more stuff I can buy, like some weapon displays for the walls (it came with just one) That's not very useful but hey its a cool money sink.

I decided to go back to kill that hinox in Lanayru. My strategy was to shoot bomb arrows on his eye, but my aim is fucking terrible, especially at a moving target coming after me. In the end I won by spamming my strongest sword on his feet then running before he could strike back. Gave some new items I havent seen before and a morale boost. I feel like I can take on an ancient beast now.

Zora's domain is defended by a pack of lizalfos, most carrying shock arrows. Where those guys even got shock arrows is anyone's guess. But compared to trying to shot a hinox in the eye while he tries to hit you with a tree, this is child's play.

Prince Zora the Radical appears to cheer me up as I approach the domain. Ok.

The blue rocks on the path to the domain are beautiful, I gotta say.

Found a scripture on the wall describing how King Zora heroically defeard a guardian by grabbing it and throwing from a high place. I smell bullshit. But we'll see.

This is a long trip. It's like they remade that zora river from TP except this time you have to climb it by foot

At last, Zora's domain. 4 fairies later. Lizalfos and electric keese are mostly easy but if they catch you off guard there's a ton of damage.

One of the guards at the entrance used to be buddies with Link when they were kids. Hes now 130, cuz apparently Zoras live a longer life than humans. I love the lore

Alright. We are at Zora's Domain. Time to get the plot moving.

Here is the situation: the sheikah made a giant robot elephant so a sweet zora girl with healing powers would pilot it and help Link beat Ganon. Unfortunately, Ganon used his 1337 h4x0r skillz to take over Mecha Dumbo, and zora girl was presumably crushed to death by the beast's mechanical insides. Or captured and executed by Ganon's forces. The game doesn't say how she died.

Now 100 years later, here is the mission: run Avast on Mecha Dumbo, so it can be ready to fight again, this time against Ganon.

Yes, I'm doing the water dungeon first. No, I'm not missing on any medication. It's just that Ive already started this quest and it has been lingering on my mind while I did the last 20 shrines or so.

Let's do this.

Also I beat shrine 30 at the entrance of the domain. Never gonna stop counting those.

I'd found one more shrine in an island far away while I was climbing the river, but I waited to get the domain warp point first. Those hills would be really annoying to climb back in the rain. I come back and beat shrine 31.

You dont expect to find a goron working at an item shop in zora's domain but I'll take it.

Water is weak to electricity so they hired a goron, an earth person, to handle the shock arrows.

But he must be doing a terrible job since all those lizalfos are managing to snatch them.

The zora's inn has water beds. Of course.

Some of the zoras hate me because I took Mipha with me to fight Ganon and came back alone, and empty handed. This game really sells the guilt of the whole thing.

The music is a cute remix of the classic zora domain tune.

I read somewhere they brought the xenoblade team to make this game. This city really feels like something out of Xenoblade. It's beautiful, but it's a little ruined by the godawful weather.

An old zora priest lets me know if I ever have a quest involving getting two people married, he's the guy to call. Noted.

I'm seeing a pattern here. The majority of the city 's zoras can be split in two groups: women who fangirl over the prince, and old dudes who used to fanboy over the princess and hate me for having let her die.

King Zora is a cool guy. I can buy he took down a guardian by throwing it

Ofc the elephant is causing this rain by spouting water upwards. Lmao.

Mecha Dumbo is a literal ship. Ok.

...

Of course Mipha was in love with Link. Being in unrequited love with Link is like a tradition passed down from a zora princess to another

This is way sadder than other games though.

  • Quest: fight a lynel to obtain 20 shock arrows.
  • Inventory: 18 shock arrows.

I should just wait for the next red moon and then go fight some lizalfos instead lol.

I'll at least check this lynel out I suppose

Got destroyed by the lynel, then just grabbed some shock arrows stuck in the nearest tree and got the hell out.

I dunno if the game actually expects me to beat this guy? W/e.

Ok this was one COOL minigame. Break incoming blocks of ice with cryonis while riding prince zora, get launched into the air, swim up waterfalls using zora armor then shoot the elephant's weak points with shock arrows in slow motion. All to open the door to the dungeon.

Dungeon 1 beaten.

I've heard people complain online these dungeons are short. This is true. However, I didn't feel underwhelmed. It was a pretty fun dungeon, with an ingenious puzzle involving controlling the elephant's trunk to make its water do things for you, in order to activate 5 control pads. In older zeldas, it would be the same puzzle but with dozens of rooms of random puzzles separating the pads from one another. Honestly, the 120 shrines already provide the random puzzles. I would prefer to get one epic dungeon, of course, but this was short and sweet. Also, considering the benchmark are the other water dungeons in the series, this one is doing pretty well!

Also cool boss. This one is less "use the dungeon item to expose weak point" and more pure fighting, with some water and "use cryonis to defend from ice blocks" thrown in the mix. Not too hard, though. That lynel could wipe the floor with this guy.

Got a magic power that revives me whenever I die, though I assume it comes with some cooldown. And the obligatory heart container.

Elephant then climbs a mountain and fires a laser at Ganon to weaken his power. Ok so that's how this will work. I was expecting some epic fight scene with the beasts and Ganon, but I guess that's the protagonist's job.

I decide to celebrate my newfond ability to kill hinoxes by taking on the 3 hinox brothers at Faron.

It's not an easy endeavor. But after lots of deaths, some attack and speed boosting elixirs, a broken royal claymore, a mipha blessing reviving me, a red moon midfight reviving a bunch of bokoblins, then the bokoblins accidentally hitting the hinox with a lightningrod, and the last hinox's AI making him get stuck behind a rock and finally allowing me to take him down. And that's shrine 32, and the 8th heart container acquired.

I also drop by Hateno lab to get Bomb+ and Stasis+, having amassed a stock of guardian parts that I needed to get the upgrades. Bomb+ is just more blast radius and shorter cooldown, but Stasis+ says it now works on enemies. I smell OP.

It only freezes enemies for a short time, bigger foes only stay frozen for about a second or two.

It is the best way to deal with swarms of keese though, stasis one of them and they all turn tail and scatter away from you.

Tried eventide again, conquered most of the island but I have no idea what to do with the Hinox. One thing I now know doesn't work is trying to get under it during a thunderstorm to make lightning hit it instead of you. Should have attempted that with mipha's blessing on. Meh.

Got to Lurelin village and shrine 33. And the obligatory chest gambling minigame. I wonder if there's a way to cheat here, this game doesn't have Lens of Truth.

TIL you can't ride the huge electric dragon. I also learned attempting to do so gives an electric charge to your body, and if you fall into a water after that, you die.

This time I had Mipha's grace though.

I guess gotta get more fairies cuz mipha alone can't cover for all my dumb experiments.

Ok why is it that every time I find a hint for a memory, it points to central hyrule?

That place is deadly.

So I go to lake hylia tower and see a smoke to the west. After a long trip, I arrive at a place near the Gerudo territory with shrine 34, and a huge pile of... garbage.

Like putrid food, with lots of vultures and flies around it.

I walk a bit more and find a woman, who came here to master her ultimate cooking. But she thinks she can make recipes with stuff like ores and guardian parts. So the smoke was her pot and the garbage are her "food" attempts.

I set to unlock more areas of the map, namely Eldin and Akkala, the northeast parts of the map.

Eldin is simple enough. Climb lots of rocks, save a goron from a flame chuchu, climb more rocks, and the tower. Said tower is just a few meters away from the zone where your entire body ignites due to Death Mountain's lava, but it's fine, I don't have to go there now.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/6/AAO9CbAADpc4.jpg

Now Akkala is trickier. The tower is on top of a ruined castle, surrounded by some black ganon goo who kills you, and guardians. Including what I call helicopter guardians. I'm not making that up. They fly, shine flashlights on you and start shooting if they see you.

I manage to avoid the path with the most guardians, the black goo, the bokoblins I have no idea what are doing there and summit the tower, though. Phew.

Now I thought I wasn't gonna come here again so soon but I soon find 4 shrines. Because this is one large, plain grassy area so shrines are easy to see, at least the freebie ones meant to be shortcuts. 2 to stables, one to a place called Tarrey Town I'm supposed to help build (the next money sink), and one at a skull island on a lake. I haven't done that one yet, but the first 3 put me at 37 shrines.

This place is pretty, though.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/7/AAO9CbAADpc5.jpg

Also since I just downloaded all screenshots from my Switch here's one I took earlier when looking for Garbage Shrine.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/8/AAO9CbAADpc6.jpg

I also find my 3rd memory, where zelda bathes at a holy pool in a (failed) attempt to unlock her ganon sealing powers. Link, his back turned to her, just listens, not being able to say anything to help (also because he's Link so he doesn't say things)

also get a hint her father, the king whose ghost helped me early, was kind of a dick

finally I find another ancient tech lab, where I meet Doc Brown

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/9/AAO9CbAADpc7.jpg

Doc Brown sends me on another quest to recover a blue flame, this time by fighting about 10 blue moblins on the way and almost dying like 6 times. Once that is done, I unlock a robot who sells ancient items, including a bunch of uber strong weapons and some armor that gives me resistance to guardian lasers.

Unfortunately all of those require ancient materials to produce and I sold about half of what I have to get money to buy weaker armor, and a sign with my name in front of my house. Well at least I now have a goal to work towards in my quest to get rid of those pesky guardians.

I also read Doc Brown's diary, a long tale of what he did during the last 100 years while he waited for me to wake up (sheikahs live long too it seems). It's mostly him getting bullied by the other scientist from Hateno, getting married, having a kid, spending decades building the robot that makes ancient armor, more decades giving it an AI that makes it behave like his first girlfriend, then shutting that down after it pissed off his actual wife. Good stuff.

Next I'm checking skull island

I get to skull lake (actually thats the right name, not skull island. The water is shaped like a skull) and beat shrine 38. The shrine itself is empty, which is what the game does when it considers getting to the shrine its own challenge. Except that was a piece of cake. Just jump and glide from the hill surrounding the lake.

Circling death mountain from the north side, I arrive at a place named Gut Check Rock. I climb said rock easily by taking a hot air strem with my paraglider to the top, where I find a shrine. A goron at the top informs me I'll only be allowed to enter the shrine if I can prove I'm RIPPED and SHREDDED. By climbing said rock again by hand, grabbing enough rupees within a time limit. Ok.

I fail to prove I'm RIPPED enough. I'll come back later with a longer stamina meter.

I got shrine 39 by solving a puzzle at veiled falls. Well, "solving" is a stretch. I did the first half, which was finding a ceremonial spear under the river, by myself, but then after spending a while trying to find what the hell I'm supposed to do with the spear, and reading some cryptic song a dozen times, impatience gets the better of me and I read a guide. I'm supposed to jump from the top of the waterfall and stab a platform with the spear as I fall. Sounds obvious now that I've read it.

Funny, doing so also vaporizes any ducks or fish unlucky enough to be near you when you hit the ground.

Forgot to paste some paragraphs between the last two posts:

Doc Brown gives me some ancient arrows as a sample. I use those to FINALLY kill a guardian. Ok thats the weaker, damaged type guardian you meet at the start of the game but it felt awesome. He drops some materials, nothing even near enough to compensate foe the cost of making more ancient arrows. I gotta farm ancient materials elsewhere.

Wolves are interesting cuz they use the same hit and run tactics as bears but are way more careful. If you stare at them they never attack, only if you try to run. Also kill a wolf, and any other wolves in the vicinity will get the hell out.

I looked at death mountain and saw one of the ancient beasts casually walking on it. The lizard one. That's some cool immersion.

So I solve the quest about summoning a storm. It felt puzzling back when I first found it, but now Ive seen lightning hit metal items on the floor so many times it's obvious. Just place one on the top of the hill and wait for lightning to explode it.

2nd shrine in a row solved with the ceremonial staff, btw.

I also gain a pair of pants made from an ancient technology named rubber, which is said to give its wearer resistance to electricity. Cool.

On the way to that quest, I'm also attacked by a massive rock.

Just a rock.

I almost try to fight it but then our friend Farosh decides to fly around just for funzies and drop electric balls on me and I dont think I can face two massive monsters at once. Gets a skull mark on the map for later.

Speaking of skull marks, I found a blue lynel in southeast lanayru, arguably the strongest non guardian entity in the game so far. I use my ninjutsu skills (sealth set) to sneak around it and grab the 600 rupees it's guarding. I wish I could see the sucker's face when it realizes it lost them.

Also tried to solve the hateno quest about lining up 3 trees on a snowy mountain. I glide from the line formed by the trees towards the beach and find no shrine. But I found a cove by the sea with a bunch of rocks: diamond, ruby, sapphire, topaz and a lot of luminous ores. Also completed the treasure chest section of my compendium, by adding all types of ore deposits.

One of the best parts of this game is when you're taught to investigate and explore every little thing that looks interesting so when you see a pile of big rocks you're like, "Oh cool! I wonder what secret is hidden here?" and then less than a minute later your blood is smeared on the ground.

While trying to find some Zora's wife, I spend a while fooling around lake hylia. No zora found, but I find shrine 41 inside a hole in the middle of the lake, with a fun puzzle involving using a bonb to transport a second one upwards on a rock

I then find a goddess statue, who tells me to bring a scale of Farosh. Yes, that farosh, the 1000000 volt dragon. I guess Im gonna need more rubber

I get bored and go back to akkala, to check two interesting formations on the map. One is a spiral peninsula, with what seems to be a shrine at the center, but I have no idea how to activate it.

The other is a huge labyrinth. I was thinking: how can a maze be hard when I have a map? The answer: guardian copters patrolling the ceiling, normal guardians patrolling the floor, and the way out being a secret wall in the hole that doesn't appear on the map. I manage to get through this madness with shrine 42, a huge flaming sword and a barbarian helmet that unlocks my primal instincts and raises my attack. Sweet.

Time to stop wasting time and go to the west, since I want to go for the rito quest next. I warp to woodlands. But before I can go to the west, I spot some intriguing rock formations at the south, with shrine 43 hidden inside. Theres a modest tier guardian scout inside, which I kill much more easily than the last one.

While exploing woodlands, I find a small island on the river, with a dead tree at the top. And a lot of bones around. I spend a few minutes trying to figure the place out. Burning the tree and whatnot. Suddenly, the bones rise, and it's the most skeleton enemies Ive ever seen in one place. Stal bokoblins, stal lizalfos, stal moblins, with flaming weapons, ice arrows and bomb arrows.

It's thriller night, and I'm not Michael Jackson. They kick my ass.

I check google and apparently theres nothing to find at this island besides enemies, and some fairies hidden in the grass. Alright.

Found a place named typholo ruins. Which is basically a completely dark forest. After a while walking randomly and losing my torch every 30 seconds because I have to stop to fight some bat, I give up. This feels like it should be easier but I guess I'm not very patient for this, having already done a maze earlier today.

So I start going to the west again, a very soothing horseback riding trip. I eventually get shrine 44 (piece of cake) and ridgeland tower... which is...

Have you ever fought 3 electric wizzrobes and 3 lizalfos while on a small platform surrounded by water from every side? That's my definition of "not hard but annoying". It's not hard because I have enough healing food to feed an army, lizalfos don't move much when they are in the water, and wizzrobes are squishy. But they make you drop your weapons every. Five. Seconds. Anyway, after the madness ends, I climb the tower.

The map now clearly shows what the "DANGER. DO NOT ENTER" area of the map is.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/8/AAO9CbAADqPi.jpg

Btw, I love how you can already know where the Ritos live from half the map away. They have a freaking sky island. Impossible to miss. Now I wonder what fantasy way I'll have to use to get there.

I looked online for missed pieces of armor. Sorry, but I have gaming FOMO. Also I'm starting to get bothered by my lack of armor. The recent trek to the west used so much food it was ridiculous.

So I get the zora helmet, which allows me to attack while swimming, another rubber item, and most important, whether I missed any great fairy or not.

And I did. In Akkala, right under my nose. I was starting to feel it was strange I never found a fairy beyond the one in kakariko.

After a sequence hunting materials to put all my stuff at +2 (well not all, I need another item from farosh and a freaking lynel horn for some stuff. Geez), I complete the soldier set +2 which reduces a whopping 9 hearts from any hits I take.

Time to test it. I go to challenge my old enemy, Guardian Scout IV. With all that armor, my best guardian weapons and attack boosting food, I (barely) best it, and claim shrine 45.

However... this was still just a test run.

The next step of my plan happens at the Great Plateau. Where I once had to climb walls to dodge damaged guardians and reach a shrine. Ive already beaten a damaged guardian once, but it took 3 ancient arrows and I don't have access to more of those now. What I need is consistency. So I grab my shield, and start practicing deflecting the guardian beams, until I can get the timing right. The armor ensures they need 2 beams to kill me, but I want to take no damage. Eventually, I kill all 3 damaged guardians in a row without losing any HP.

Now where to next?

You see, the tower at central hyule field, the one I almost lost my horse trying to reach, is located at the west part of it. I just unlocked another tower at Ridgelands, which borders the west of Central Hyrule. I have a good starting point to raid the tower now, while minimizing the number of guardians in the way. And stronger armor, a few +2 guardian weapons I got from the scout, and the skill to deflect beams.

It is time to reclaim Central Hyrule. With a map, I'll be able to find all those memories the painter keeps pointing me to.

Based on the map you showed in the last post, you havent missed any other Great Fairies. There are 4 in total.

Well, this wasn't too hard. Two guardians defending the tower, and one I took one down (after eating two beams to the face), all I had to do was climb the tower from the opposite side of the other. Now I finally have the map of the castle. Also found a puzzle involving shooting an arrow through two stone rings, courtesy of rito bard. Shrine 46 get.

I find a new stable and shrine 47, where an NPC gives me the option to change my horses' hairstyle. Thanks for adding this important feature, nintendo. I give Trampler a cool mohawk.

Memory 4 is zelda talking about her horse, and how she tried to pray at all 3 goddess springs to unlock her power. So there are 3 springs, Ive been at 2, and the third is on mount lanayru. Zelda did not know, but praying at all 3 did unlock her power a bit later, it seems.

On the way back, I meet a white horse, which according to an old guy at the stable, is the descandant of Zelda's horse. Taming it is hard (I have to eat a stamina item mid tame) but I pull it off, and the horse's stats are ridiculously good. I name it Bojack.

When it show it to the old man, it gives me the saddle that Zelda's horse used. Now it looks super fancy. This ain't no Epona but I guess it's the next best thing the game has to offer.

You are right about that, it's the best horse in the game... unless you use amiibos. Then you can actually get Epona lol

I just looked at the price for amiibos and I'm trying to imagine why anyone would pay for that.

So lately I've been focusing on hearts over stamina, to get the master sword.

I need 9 more shrines (or 5 shrines and an ancient beast) for 13.

Might end up getting when I beat the next beast, which lines up with the series' tradition of getting the sword by the midpoint of the game.

Oh no need to buy actual amiibos, just spend 20 dollars for a pack of the NFC cards.

Shrines 48 and 49. First one is in a canyon at ridgelands, not much to say. Next one is more interesting cuz I have to beat a guardian stalker to get to it, in its full 1500 hp, laser shooting, spider leg glory. Takes me two tries, but I pull it off. I'm starting to enjoy fighting those things. Also they drop so many parts I can see myself buying some guardian weapons from now on.

Memory 5 at a forest southeast of the castle that was rather easy to find now that I have a map. This one is after Ganon takes over the beasts. Starting to get bored of those memories, tbh. While they do add depth, every single one of them is Zelda being sad because she doesn't have powers. I wonder if every memory is like that or if I just got a bad streak.

I have hints for another two memories, but they seem pretty close to the castle so it's tricky. The last 5, I still need to find the painter who tells where they are.

Not much novel stuff but I gotta announce my counts.

On the way to bird people land, got shrines 50 to 52 and memories 6 and 7. Those were less sad Zelda and more hopeful Zelda so I guess that's progress.

One of the memories was about her trying to enter a shrine, so the memory came as a freebie with the shrine. There was a guardian scout 4 inside though, but Ive killed one of those before. I gotta start progressing the main plot before I get too strong for it. Also I'm just one heart container from getting the Master Sword now.

Btw, what I thought was a sky island is actually the ancient beast. Those things never fail to impress.

Some npc tells me to look from the top of the tower at a right hour of the day so its shadow points to the faity fountain.

I find the fountain before even getting to the tower by simply looking down while I'm gliding.

I go into another upgrading spree, this time taking my defense to 48. That's 12 hearts reduced from every hit. And another 6 points if I can bring another hinox eye, which at this point is pretty easy.
Already regretting using google to find the previous fairy. My defense went from crap to amazing very quickly.

And I still just got my ass nearly handed out to me by a black moblin. Power creep is op

Tabantha tower unlocked. This tower is so high up I have to wear winter clothes just to stand on it. The flipside is that I'm seeing another two new shrines.

I arrive at Rito village. A slower remix of the classic Wind Waker song starts playing

The Rito can't fly high because huge mecha bird will shoot them if they do. They say it's demoralizing. Sounds like a lesser issue that what the zoras were facing (unstopping rain breaking a dam and flooding all of hyrule), but hey, I won't judge.

I find an armor shop that sells non-shitty winter clothes. Shut up and take my rubies.

The local inn has a type of bed make from Rito feathers.

...

Uh...

The winter clothes I just bought are also made of Rito feathers. What the hell is going on with this town.

Why do rito children in this game look like ducks. They are so ugly. Did they get generically modified so the shopkeepers would harvest their feathers for beds and winter clothes, or something?

Beat shrine 53, the obligatory city shotcut

The Rito chief is a huge ass owl.

Like, huge. I first thought he was a goron before noticing the owly face

The ritos don't have the same insanely long lifespan as the zora and the sheikah, so they don't recognize me. They do recognize me sheikah slate though, so they know I'm a big deal.

Quest: join a rito guy named Teba to attack mecha bird with bomb arrows so I can enter it.

Aka the same thing as with the elephant but reflavored

Also important: do that before Teba decides to face the bird alone and die, leaving his wife and kid to fend for themselves. That's... kind of important.

Cuz apparently hes that reckless.

So Link has a memory of Revali, the original pilot of mecha bird

I had seen the internet mention he was an asshole. The game did not disappoint me. He is a 10/10 jerk. Completely full of himself. Doesn't get why he can't be the main character when he has wings and Link doesn't. Excuse me, do you have a triple triangle tatoo in your hand that flashes sometimes? No? Then stop whining, Tweety.

Revali: "I challenge you to a duel to prove if you are worthy of facing Ganon. Let's do the duel on the top of mecha bird, Oh wait, you can't reach mecha bird, cuz YOU CAN'T FLY!" - flies away, laughing.

Well jerk characters are also part of good storytelling, Revali seems pretty good in that regard.

I never even knew this lol, maybe I shoulda spent more time talking to people. So that means they've gone 100 years of non stop rain? That dam must be raltively new then.

Regardless never ending rain would be like heaven to me.

From what I gather the ancient beasts only woke up recently, maybe in response to Ganon's seal weakening.
