when the fuck did deathcore explode in popularity? its really not my thing outside a few albums that stand out (despised icon's the ills of modern man being the primary one), but it seems like the main style of metal that is popular with early 20s & teens.

Around 2005 Job for a Cowboy released the Doom EP. It went about as viral as you could in those days for underground music, and it really picked up from there.

Funny enough, Doom is the only Deathcore release by Job for a Cowboy since they went full death metal afterwards.

Deathcore is probably the more prominent subgenre over the old style death metal. Which makes sense. Thrash and old school death are boomer genres now. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But now bands today are being fed through the filter of Slipknot, Linkin Park and bands of the last 20 to 25 years versus being inspired by the traditional stuff like the older generation was.

Yeah or other stuff like Bring Me the Horizon. They started as deathcore and continue to pivot on each release it seems like.

unfortunately a lot of the newer death metal bands that i do see younger people listening to are just soulless tech wank inspired by shit like necrophagist

that aside, it'll be interesting to see where 'extreme' metal goes in the future since streaming is the primary way people access music today which makes more niche sounds more accessible to a wider audience

My favourite death metal band right now is probably Gojira and they go against what I said before. Deathcore and metalcore has been a mainstream entry point for over a decade. But Gojira still feels like they pull more from Metallica / Pantera / old school death. They were death metal that got filtered into stadium groove metal. They were also started in the 90's and their trajectory is quite a bit different from the 2000's bands.

my favorite has been pumping out (almost) exclusively absolutely great material since the '90s - The Chasm

Their roots are definitely in Slayer / Morbid Angel, but even their newest album from this year sounds fresh and interesting

Yeah, I like bmth but wouldnt count Oli as a top vocalist. Youre right about them being consistent, no doubt.
