33 isn't exactly old.

Last I checked, the age limit on enlistment was 39.

By military standards, 33 is up there in age. Most recruits they want at 18. If I had served from 18 I would be roughly 15 years deep. Most retire after 20 years IIRC, unless they moved way up the ranks and still have involvement.

Its older than most recruits, but its by no means unheard of.

Of course it is preferred that people enlist at a younger age, but even in the military 33 isn't outrageously old. It would be smarter to enlist early, since you could retire in your late 30s. Or at least have more years to take advantage of the benefits.

And yes, retirement age from the military is at or above 20 years to qualify for retirement payment.

Otherwise I'll just LOL and continue on with my life.

If I could somehow get into the NUC program I wouldn't mind it that much. A recruiter already tried to recruit me into it, but I don't want to go back to school for another year.

If they expedited the process somehow or took my degree into consideration I wouldn't mind tbh.

There's a wide variety of complex reasons playing into the low recruitment numbers and there is no one solution to it.

I've been in the Army for 9 years come October and many people join just to get out of situations, or just a temporary stop gap.

It's bad enough to the point where they're extending the max time you can stay in at certain ranks. It only applies to people getting out between now and Sep 30 2023, but unless things change I don't see that going away.

<_< though without an active war or realistic potential threat, recruitment will always be hard.

Military pay is a bit different from most fields. You're paid a salary based on rank and time in service. Circumstancr depending, you're also paid certain allowances. BAS, allowance for sustenance, and BAH, allowance for housing, are the major ones.

A fresh E1 makes about $1833 before allowance. Which would be about $11.45 an hour if they work a typical 40 hour work week. However, their work hours can vary significantly from one command to another, so it could be a bit more or less. Regardless, they won't stay at that rate for long, because enlisted personnel automatically advance to E2 after nine months and E3 nine months after that. Eligible for E4 a year after that, but that involves a testing and evaluation process for selection, though I think those tests have been suspended since COVID kicked off.

So, optimistically an enlisted member could make E5 in a bit over three years, if they start at E1. And an E5 with 3 years in would be paid $2920 a month, before allowances.

BAH allowance is based on duty location, so it can vary pretty wildly and will change when you move to another duty station.

Anyway, that's a lot of words to say that suggesting $8 an hour is typical for military pay isnt necessarily accurate, because there are other factors to consider.

wackyteen posted...
Retiring at 15 years for 30% (2% per year under new system) of what you made is a trash retirement ngl <_<

The new system is the Blended Retirement System. Which is calculated based on the average of your 3 highest earning years, multiplied by 2% for every year you served. So, an E7 retiring after 20 would probably make about $2000 or so a month in retirement. (If my napkin math isn't completely dumb).

However, that doesn't include the other part of the BRS, your Thrift Savings Plan. That's basically equivalent to an IRA or Roth IRA that you can contribute a percentage of your salary to every month. The military will match your contributions up to 5% and they contribute 1%, even if you don't contribute anything at all yourself. So, if you contribute 5%, the military will contribute 6%. It is then invested based on whichever investment plan you choose.

The idea behind the change was that servicemembers who don't serve a full 20 years for the retirement, but opted to contribute to their TSP, could still take away something from their time in.
