Of course it is preferred that people enlist at a younger age, but even in the military 33 isn't outrageously old. It would be smarter to enlist early, since you could retire in your late 30s. Or at least have more years to take advantage of the benefits. I've been in the Army for 9 years come October and many people join just to get out of situations, or just a temporary stop gap. It's bad enough to the point where they're extending the max time you can stay in at certain ranks. That's basically equivalent to an IRA or Roth IRA that you can contribute a percentage of your salary to every month. The military will match your contributions up to 5% and they contribute 1%, even if you don't contribute anything at all yourself. So, if you contribute 5%, the military will contribute 6%. It is then invested based on whichever investment plan you choose.
