The new system is the Blended Retirement System. Which is calculated based on the average of your 3 highest earning years, multiplied by 2% for every year you served. So, an E7 retiring after 20 would probably make about $2000 or so a month in retirement. (If my napkin math isn't completely dumb).

However, that doesn't include the other part of the BRS, your Thrift Savings Plan. That's basically equivalent to an IRA or Roth IRA that you can contribute a percentage of your salary to every month. The military will match your contributions up to 5% and they contribute 1%, even if you don't contribute anything at all yourself. So, if you contribute 5%, the military will contribute 6%. It is then invested based on whichever investment plan you choose.

The idea behind the change was that servicemembers who don't serve a full 20 years for the retirement, but opted to contribute to their TSP, could still take away something from their time in.

Why doesn't the military make their jobs attractive enough so that they dont need a draft? Make people want to fight for you, don't force them to.
Maybe triple the pay for a start and stop treating people like subhumans.

I really wouldn't mind joining and getting some kind of training. I would enjoy the exercise, learning different techniques, and being challenged. I don't see why they have to have all that stupid paperwork. It's like they want to shove in your face everything did wrong.

Look what the government has done to us over the course of a few years and ask yourself how many people would report in and how many would do the smart thing and ignore it.

You can get locked up for neglecting a draft.
