I hadn't played it in forever and I remember loving it as a kid. I started it a while ago again and I forgot how annoying the text scrolling noise is. Also IIRC you basically need a guide to get all the little monster things right?

I do intend to continue my replay.

I love it and the speedruns for the games are amazing. The lost age in particular just saw some huge breakthroughs in the last 6 months. Not just final boss skip or early Isaac stuff but now there's a lot more skips that basically make it so once you get the boat, it's basically time to break the game and get to the credits.

I like the class system, I just wish the games had enough of a challenge to really lean more into having to incentivize actually customizing your party to take on unexpected challenges, or having buffs be more than just window dressing. But it's a GBA RPG so whatever.

I REALLY like the battle backgrounds in every game.

Extremely boring dungeon designs filled with too many block pushing puzzles and not really enough interesting applications of the potential of being able to use magic on the overworld could have brought.

Story is generic save the world stuff (with a lot of really dumb nonsensical shit but it's a JRPG so again, whatever), which would be fine if the dialogue wasn't unbearably dull and full of filler, and even this could have been fine if the characters at least had distinguishable personalities or anything interesting about them at all.

Music is actually pretty damn good, especially considering the limitations of the GBA sound chip. Sakuraba couldn't be lazy with this like he is with most of the music he does in games. All the pieces hit fit their contexts very well, and the music for the Lighthouse dungeons are all dope too (Cept Mercury Lighthouse but the song there makes sense given the situation).

Djinn collecting is annoying.

Also, fuck Kraden.

4/10 series. Wouldn't replay them nowadays, but I did enjoy them when I was younger.

I really wish there was an in game journal that tracked a new class once you had "unlocked" it.
Knowing you need 4 earth and 3 wind is fine and dandy, but with as many classes as there are a quick reference would have been nice.

Extremely cool class system, although I wish the game was a little harder so you actually care about interacting with it instead of just sticking the matching element on everyone. The way you change class mid-battle too is super neat

The BGM is amazing, of course

but ultimately I am sort of negative on the game overall mostly because of this

I loved the first two games back when they came out, but they clearly benefited from being the first original JRPG on the Game Boy Advance. The music and graphics really showed what the GBA was capable of, even if the actual story wasn't all that impressive and the characters themselves being very dull and underdeveloped.

Ving_Rhames posted...

It was cool you had to use djinn to build up summons. When I was younger I'd just abuse the hell out of summons in games that just let you use them whenever.

It was great for it's time but in retrospect there isn't anything that is truly unique about the games as the gameplay was basically a mix of "Good JRPG stuff". There was no need to have the first game end on a cliffhanger, and while Dark Dawn was a decent attempt at reviving the series, it was unnecessary, especially with the way it ended too.

From what I read years ago, the first two games were supposed to be one game, but the GBA cart couldn't handle that, so they had to split the games up.

The first two games were also supposed to represent the "prequel" for the real story, which was what Dark Dawn was meant to hearken. Of course, that didn't work out.

Best JRPG ever, the first two games combined.

No other game has made battles so fluid to navigate and watch. You can speed through the menus and hold b to speed through the animations (but you shouldn't bc they're gorgeous)

Also love how it uses magic not just as weapons or healing and teleporting, but also to solve problems while exploring, or reading minds. Too cool.

The changed classes are considerably stronger though. I never messed with them either the first time around, or a couple after that, but mixing and matching the Djinns actually makes your characters a lot stronger. Makes summoning a much more planned thing tho.

Absolutely loved the first and second one. In fact, they still belong to top 20 favourite games of all time. Class system and battle mechanics were great. Beautiful soundtrack. Loved the character/world design and the simple gameplay interactions as well.

I might play them again in a few years.

The third one was a bit disappointing. It's solid and definitely not bad. But not as great as the other two.
