How is it fun to run across the same 2D area over and over? And your reward for doing so are dead ends. I feel like rats in a cheese maze have more fun because at least they get cheese at the end, not get cheesed.

What do you think the powerups allowing for further progression are to metroidvania fans?

Maybe its a generational thing.

What you described in the OP is what I call exploration. Mapping out a whole sections and having to remember parts of the map that you couldn't traverse gives the world an atmosphere. (IMO)

When its done right, you will never forget a Metroidvania map.

Its been years since I've played Symphony of the Night, and I have a lot of that map memorized.

It's even worse because the game wants you to get lost and backtrack with bad maps and having to find them and buying limited markers

I would rather eat real cheese than get a powerup in a game

I played Metroid Dread recently and honestly didn't really feel like there was all that much backtracking. It was paced really well.

bad maps

lol, HK has one of the best map systems in the genre

it makes you get to know the environment rather than being told which square you're in

I get to explore for upgrades and lore. Also, I have to wonder if tc just has bad map memory.

I don't understand how a game like Hollow Knight that has very distinctive room layouts and landmarks can draw so much criticism for not literally telling the player that they went right and down from the last time they checked the map, but a game where every room uses the same mechanical or abstract tileset and everything feels same-y but gives you a grid showing where you are and tells you where you need to go is seen as fine. It's like people lost any ability to do anything but follow a guide...

Well yeah of course you don't have trouble finding where to go because the trouble is the fun part for you.
