https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brooklyn-half-marathon-runner-death-heatwave-b2084350.html

A 30-year-old man taking part in the Brooklyn Half Marathon has collapsed and died after crossing the finish line as a scorching heatwave hit the East Coast of the US. An NYPD spokesperson told The Independent that the runner, whose identity has not been revealed, collapsed at the finish line along the Coney Island Boardwalk just before 9am. He was rushed to nearby Coney Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a possible cardiac episode. At least six other race participants were also taken to hospital with various injuries over the course of the run, three of them with serious injuries, according to the FDNY. The tragedy struck as runners faced gruelling temperatures on Saturday morning, as the annual Brooklyn Half Marathon was held in person for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

More than 30m people are under a heat advisory this weekend as temperatures are expected to reach the top 90s across parts of the Northeast. In New York City, temperatures were forecast to reach 91 degrees Fahrenheit at the days peak, with a feel of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The unusual mid-May heatwave comes close to smashing the record of 93 degrees Fahrenheit recorded back in 1996. Participants were urged to know the signs of heat problems, drink enough fluids and respect their limits. Heat and humidity increase the physical challenge of running, and health problems can occur when you push beyond what your body can handle. Do not aim for a personal best on a warm, sticky day, particularly if you are not used to such conditions, read the guidelines. Saturdays death comes eight years after tragedy struck at the 2014 race, when a 31-year-old man collapsed at the finish line and died sometime after.

Ugh, no. Treadmill sucks. But I won't run if over 75 degrees. Even that is pushing it, as I try to stay under 70 if possible. I only run at like 6am in the middle of summer.

You can run outside in the morning before the heat gets bad, or after sun down like many people here do and enjoy a jog under the moon.

Most common cause of stuff like this is Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy - what happens is that the septum of the heart is thick, and whenever you're hypovolemic, it actually obstructs the outflow (aorta) and you basically die of high output heart failure.

Yeah, I know you are in Florida and night running with some of the people around there sucks. But crack of dawn running is great once you get your ass moving. That is the hard part. But coming back home before 7am and then brewing coffee is the greatest feeling.

i mean

humans can run way more than a marathon. some people run hundreds of miles in just a few days.

Personally I can run in the heat, as long as the sun isn't shining on me. I usually run at dusk, partly because of the heat but mostly because I don't want to get sunburned.

how are we at the point where somebody claims it's stupid to run more than eight miles.

running eight miles at once is not really very hard or taxing. an average person in normal shape (or an above-average american) would be able to do that pretty easily after a bit of training.

i ran this race last weekend, finished at 1:23:09 (6:21/mi pace)
https://results.nyrr.org/runner/13315/result/22BKH

  • prior to 9:30AM or so, 90%+ humidity and a steamy, soupy fog. not good conditions, but not inherently dangerous
  • i would guess the guy who died has some underlying heart issue
  • after 9:30AM the sun burned away all the fog, temp went up to 80s, and anyone still running at that point was not really in shape to be running a half marathon and would have a rough time regardless of conditions, excessive hospitalizations at that point in the day not too surprising

While I wouldn't use the word stupid, he has a point. I have run a half marathon and contemplated a full, and whenever I get crazy with training, I notice that issues are more likely to arise when going past 8 miles. Whenever I max out runs between 6 and 8 miles, I almost never have any aches and pains.

BTW, I ran over 6 miles yesterday at a 8:27 pace, so I know damn well that I could significantly increase my distance if I dropped back to closer to a 9 minute pace. But is it worth it just to tell people I ran a marathon? The old joke is "How do you know someone has run a marathon?" "Because they tell you".

Sir, obesity rate in the US is near 40 percent for both men (slightly less) and women (slightly more). Even barring that, a lot (A LOT) of modern people work and live fairly sedentary lives.

but hopefully those folks aren't signing up for half marathons.

i'm at the point where if I run any less than 5 miles and it's not some structured workout where i have to hit certain paces, it's essentially a day off.

What do you think @Wetterdew was really pondering?

IMO, he wanted to know how we, as a society (Id go as far as saying species), are so lacking in athletic ability and possibly motivation that we would consider an 8 mile run as absurd. Its not a question meant for runners specifically. The only thing lacking from my answer is recognizing the paradigm shift from walking to motorized transportation.

Wetter did have the caveat with a bit of training as well as stipulating it average person; above-average American. What he said is a fair statement.

Thats impressive. I dont do long distance running, but I did a mile sprint earlier this year and hit under 6 minutes for the first time ever. Its hard to fathom keeping a 6:30 pace for 13+ miles.

Yeah, Im in Texas as well. I saw the conditions and thought thats just Tuesday. It wouldnt even be called a heat wave here. Im kinda surprised someone in good enough shape to finish a half marathon would succumb to it, but on the flip side I know I cant handle the cold. The people in my area are just more used to the heat. It is still dangerous and any loss of life from it is tragic.
