And now thanks to gas prices many of those trucks are sitting in dealership lots taking up space while the hybrids are on 3 month back order.

Too many oversized vehicles, road design that prioritizes vehicles over anything else. And yeah, smart phones make distracted driving a lot easier to do. Shit like driving while reading a newspaper is too awkward and absurd for most people to even consider.

1) Obama declared his intention to run for presidency
2) the WWE had that horrifying show where they were doing a memorial show for Chris Benoit only to discover midway that he was the one who killed his family and self
3) Transformers by Michael Bay premiered

Oh wait, those are all just things that happened that year and have nothing to do with a significant rise in vehicular accidents.

That graph doesn't even do a good job of associating a causal relationship of the release of the iPhone to the rise in pedestrian traffic fatalities anyways. For another 5 years after the release pedestrian fatalities were still low anyways. Like, what phone was released in 2013 that would cause that spike?

I mean most of it probably is because of awful road and vehicle design like David Zipper even says in this article.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/11/deadly-myth-human-error-causes-most-car-crashes/620808/

He even mentions he's skeptical if self-driving cars will help all that much.

That said, I do genuinely believe most drivers are bad. Human error is still a factor, just maybe not the main factor in what makes driving so dangerous.

You absolutely could browse the internet on dumb phones. I used to browse gamefaqs on one. You could still play games and you could still check emails from cell phones. Doing these things isn't new, they were already ubiquitous, and I doubt phones becoming smart is as much of an impetus as that graph suggests.

So much so that it's the driving force behind pedestrian fatalities? I highly doubt it. You'd literally see yt playing in almost every single car if that were the case. People are really shitty with their phones but for as long as we've had iPhones we've also had distracted driving laws in place to combat them.

The pedestrians around these parts have no fear of death

they will walk right out into the middle of the road during heavy traffic, even though there is a crosswalk 30 feet away

the crosswalks work perfectly fine, but no one uses them

I see it all the time. Dumb fucks walking down the center of the road and avoiding the sidewalk like it is going to give you the ick.

Sometimes there are 4 or 5 of them and they REFUSE to move out of the way of a car until they are right behind them and slam on the horn. Then they act like the car driver is some kinda of asshole for driving on the road.

The absolute worst is when its 4am and they are doing this shit on a street with no lights and wearing all black. Ive had it happen to me at least 10 times.

It doesnt shock me at all that the number of accidents and hit and runs in these cases are jumping up. Your average pedestrian is a fucking moron.

I use a crosswalk every day going to work, crossing when I have the right of way, and I've almost been splatted by inattentive drivers many times. It's because drivers who want to turn right only make sure no cars are coming, and don't even look out for pedestrians right in front of them.

Same. The average car driver does not have the necessary attentiveness proportionate to the danger they pose to everyone else, including other car drivers. That's why cars are getting bigger and "safer" for the occupants. Drivers are a menace.

Yes they do. Doesn't always mean drivers will care. There are plenty of times I see someone standing at the edge of a crosswalk ready to cross, but the car won't stop for them. There are also just some areas where a crosswalk isn't a realistic option.

There are dumb pedestrians sure, but they're not the ones speeding along in giant metal death traps.

There's a guy in my morning commute who always jogs in the middle of the road. He's not even crossing. He's just jogging along like he's a car himself, while everyone swerves into the other lane of opposing traffic to dodge him.

This is why I ride my bike on the sidewalk. We don't have bike lanes here, and riding alongside drivers is an accident waiting to happen. I've ridden on the side of the road (in winter when it snows and sidewalks aren't shoveled) and cars go around me at full speed giving me a whole 6 inches of clearance. It's scary.

It's also a failure of city planning, imo. Planners and City Council Members know (or should know better) that suburban sprawl and car culture aren't sustainable on a large scale. Sprawl brings in a lot of money while the roads are brand new and the city has land to grow into, but the infrastructure can't be maintained without strong commercial development and sales tax to subsidize it. Many, many suburban cities lose their battle with pavement maintenance, let the roads decay, and never find the money to fill in sidewalk gaps (often inherited from their county at the time of incorporation).

Car-centric infrastructure is generally hostile to pedestrians, and it's a money pit that's difficult to escape from.

I think if smartphones were the main cause of this increase we'd be seeing a similar trend in other advanced countries. But we don't:
In the EU, pedestrian deaths decreased over a similar timeframe:
https://www.dw.com/en/berlin-gets-germanys-first-pedestrian-law/a-56480003
While motor vehicle deaths across the European Union dropped nearly 25% between 2010 and 2018, according to the European Transport Safety Council, pedestrian deaths dropped 19%.
The UK saw a much smaller increase prior to the pandemic:
