I tried to, since it's not that long, and I hear it's the GOAT revenge tale, but I find it difficult to read Shakespeare's works, with the way he wrote.

I kept re-reading parts to try to understand their meaning, and I eventually just dropped it.

I haven't read it, either.

I've seen it performed like 5 times, though.

I love it. I've read it a bunch and seen it performed live a few times, and of course seen a lot of movie adaptations. Shakespeare's plays aren't really meant to be read though. They were made to be performed on stage. Like a lot of the action isn't written on the page, since the actors are supposed to, you know, act out the story. They're usually much easier to follow if you watch them.

I read many of the other plays.

I just avoided the hell out of this one.

Read it in my senior year of high school.

I admit it dragged from time to time, but I got the gist of it.

Just watch The Bad Sleep Well by Akira Kurasawa, it's a loose adaption, but takes a lot of aspects from Hamlet.

It's also one of Kurosawa's less good movies.

So much this. I never got around to reading/watching it until I was rehearsing for the part of Laertes (still my favorite part I ever played btw).
By the time we did the performances, it was obvious we the players enjoyed it much more than the audience (a lot of whom probably weren't familiar with the story), which is understandable as a lot things can be missed if you see it just once, and it'll just come off as tedious and prosaic. The more you experience the story however, the more you get to notice and appreciate the nuances and symbolism.

Yeah, it helps to see/read them more than once. In my experience, they just keep getting better the more I revisit them. But even just the basics are easier to follow if you watch a performance. The actors provide a ton of context by bringing the emotion out of the dialogue, and it all just flows so much better when it's being acted.

I liked The Bad Sleep Well, but it's been over a decade since I've seen it. I forget a lot of the details.

The *only* thing I know about Hamlet is he has soliloquy which I memorized, a skull is involved, and someone named Polonius gets stabbed while eavesdropping.
