I currently work remotely on an 80,000 per year salary for a health insurance company as a Software Engineer

The current offer is 3 days in office 2 days at home JP Morgan Chase. I'd also have to relocate from CT to Jersey City. In the transition time I can stay at my family house in Brooklyn before I get a new spot thats closer.

Should I accept the offer? Or is it not worth the travel and changes I'd have to do through. And loss of freedom?

Do you have any visibility into what a final offer at the end of your contract would be? Contractors often make a significantly higher hourly rate because the company isn't providing any benefits.

If my math doesn't fail me that's 115K/year on your new offer. Have you considered:

1. What is the difference in cost of living between your place and the new one?
2. What other benefits do they offer and how do they compare with your current job? e.g. signing bonus, 401k, vacations, stocks
3. Do you have room for growth in the new job? If you want that.
4. Do you want to live in the new location?
5. How do state taxes compare?

If all the above is worth 35k/year, then move. Otherwise stay or ask for more. You really want to be sure that the extra 35k is going to be money for you instead of just an adjustment to reflect the cost of living/taxes in the new place.

Right these are the main things that has me hesitant.

I'd be going from full time remote to a contract job that I have to come in office and relocate to and work hard to prove myself. Its more pay, but after going through the transition I probably will wind up spending the difference in travel etc.

And if I do not get picked up that would really mess me up.

Currently in employed with a really reputable full time consulting/tech company that has me on a contract with a health insurance company.

If the current health insurance company decides I'm underperforming, I have already put in so much work that I'll just be transitioned to some other contract with my company. So in kind of comfortable secure and have a lot of benefits (health care and even legal insurance).

I'm still debating over it and asking others of opinions.

Yeah I'm thinking this too, the recruiter is going to be mad though. He's already been giving me microaggressions for being hesitant accepting the offer lol

The numbers aren't adding up though. He does say adding JP Morgan to my resume is a great thing for experience but I don't know if I care enough for all of that. The only thing I feel I'm missing out on is the potential chance to get back closer to NYC my home city been wanting to try to hey back for a while

For a software engineer within spitting distance of NY it's low. He's already severely underpaid at 80K, could make that doing desktop support.

You're really underpaid already, but you should be looking for a full time from day 1 job, fully remote. Also fuck that recruiter. You don't owe them anything, he needs to put a better ob offer in front of you.

i would not relocate for a software job in 2022, especially one thats just a contract position

imo you can easily find a comparable job, working remote, for that amount of money if you put in the time looking

source: I just got a new software job for a 25% raise

as an aside, I would have no interest in working in the financial sector as a software engineer especially for JP Morgan

but also, the stakes are super high; if shit goes down in off hours somebodys gotta be available. Pressure is on for any changes to work exactly correct because money is involved

Use this link to compare the cost of living in Jersey City to your current location. It'll help you figure out if the extra $40,000 is actually a pay raise or not.

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/comparison.jsp

Jersey City is really, really expensive.

Also, you might want to look into software engineering work in Washington, D.C. or it's surroundings, specially the contractor companies for the DOD. Their pay and benefits are much nicer than this offer. You'd have to live in Maryland or Northern Virginia, though. Which is cheaper than Jersey City, but the traffic is worse.

It's a little low (I mean I don't know how many years of experience you have)

JPMC would look good on your resume, not sure about the commute but anything longer than 1hr in NYC area will destroy you mentally

The math is technically correct, but working at a bank he'll have a lot of "forced" holidays. I think you guys ought to skip 3 weeks of pay in the math to get a better estimate.
