You can substitute but they're not interchangeable. It's like using margarine instead of butter. It'll "work" but it won't always taste the same and in some cases is just a bad idea. Crme frache is mostly used when it's being cooked into something else like a pastry. Sour cream is good for making sauces, dips, or as a topping.

I love sour cream. Nearly any sort of Mexican style food gets a huge pile of it. I also like to put it on beef stroganoff. Baked potatoes always get it. I like to dip some kinds of chips in it too. Especially ranch flavored Doritos.

Whenever I use it I will typically just eat a heaping spoonful or two before putting it away. But it has to be Daisy brand. None of the others that I have tried can really compare.
