New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez noticed President Joe Biden didn't mention the student debt crisis during his State of the Union and she said it might translate to poor turnout at the polls.

"There are some things that were left unsaid that we are really going to have to work on as a party, in order to really speak to constituencies that have historically supported the president, whose turnout we need, whose support we need right now and in the coming years, that perhaps haven't heard their issues spoken to in the way that they wanted to hear it," Ocasio-Cortez told MSNBC Tuesday night.

"Things like student loan debt, the larger themes and crises in education, as well as the piece on immigration was really just glossed over," she added.

It's even worse in the UK

Everyone has instantly forgot about Boris Johnson's lockdown parties and demands for him to step down for repeated lying.

It's all now Russia/Ukraine.

I'm not downplaying Russia's invasion for a second but because of evil and corrupt Johnson is, it kinda sucks that no one is willing to address both at once and he's gonna get away with it again

And a lot of the UK sanctions are secretly toothless. Stuff like "we will freeze your assets!... in a month...". And some oligarchs who are being sanctioned by the US but aren't by the UK, who also happen to donate massive amounts of money to the tories. Just a coincidence no doubt.

Lol nah, fuck her. I stand by my reasoning and would add that there still isn't a single valid argument for student loan forgiveness and she can't even present a good case as to why it should.
Now had she said something like "the interest rates are outrageous, we need to fix interest rates on existing and future loans" I could get behind that. It's not wrong and seems like a happy medium.

Sad thing about this whole discussion is it definitely incentivizes some people to not work towards paying off their loans when they can cause they're hoping on a prayer that some saviour in DC will wipe them away even though that is almost certainly never gonna happen.

So basically it's gonna hang over their head and finances for the rest of their life because politicians continuously strung them along.

Yep , student loan relief is basically a massive bribe. Vote for me and I'll forgive the tens of thousands you owe for what may or may not be a worthless degree. And meanwhile the guys that were cautious and passed on university get nothing. Fuck that , if they get their debt waived, I want a fatty check too. They should also offer people who couldn't afford college grants.

But really I just don't want any of it. Your point about the predatory interest rates is right on , and the other guy about addressing the way college has turned into a for profit business. With a majority of these colleges having supposedly progressive to left wing faculty ftr. They preach about greater equality and fairness then hose people.

Interesting backpedal, but sure let's go with it.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/06/what-the-student-debt-forgiveness-debate-is-about.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8pjd1QEA0c

For one, student debt disproportionately affects people at the low end of economic lines. Those saddled with debt find themselves with no way out despite needing to enter debt in order to try to enter an American workforce that is losing a lot of jobs to automation, leaving a considerable percentage of jobs that would otherwise require a college degree.

Were our country "fairly" distributed in economic capabilities, the argument could be made that those taking out debt would be a simple case of bad judgment, but I don't think I need you to agree with me that that is not the case.

Also bears mentioning that these economic lines correlate with racial lines.

For another, the system as a whole is unsustainable. The debt is piling up without a return. That's not good debt.

Basically this. You knew they were never going to wipe all student loan debt.

All they did was force forgiveness programs for federal or state employees to actually do what they agreed to do 20 years ago.

This.

Biden never claimed he was going to wipe away student. So hinting at it is her lying.
Biden at most said 10k, and he's made it clear multiple times verbally that he doesn't think the executive branch has the sole authority to unanimously wipe away 10k of debt. He said he would push for congress instead.
Biden has an abundance of more pressing matters. Russia, inflation, covid, voting rights, his BBB plan still not having enough votes in Congress.

AOC knows all of this yet is going on about tuition purely for likes.

I don't see at any point where AOC is saying "all debt forever should be eliminated" that people in this topic are claiming. She said straight up that Biden didn't mention the student debt crisis, which is factually true.

Trying to extrapolate her words into what you think she actually meant is just showing your bottom.

But hey I get it.

It is.

We simply do not have enough Democrats in Congress to pass anything.

The infrastructure bill got watered down due to this;
BBB couldn't pass;
The voting rights legislation couldn't pass.
Inflation is rising and Republicans are dead set on making it stay that way;
The Republicans new darling, Putin, is raging war and hinting at nukes as the world wonders does he have covid brain;
Covid is still being addressed;
And much much more.

There is a lot of big problems going on right now. America can't even deal with one of those problems. Yet AOC for attention needs those likes so she brings up tuition.

In short, you may want America to deal with more than one problem. The simple reality is we can't even realistically deal with one since we don't have a solid majority in Congress to pass anything.

We have several contributing factors causing inflation to rise like covid, the last presidents policies, Russia, etc. Inflation, that is hurting families right now with prices rising at the grocery store to the gas pump.

AOC instead of wanting to tackle those problems, wants to tackle something that will only pile on the inflation problem. But hey, it gives her adoring fans some feel good moments, and AOC the loving attention she needs.

I'm not looking for "inspired" feel better talking points from AOC.

We have multiple more problematic issues going on right now. Some new, some old due to past administration. Let's focus on those instead of seeking attention seeking "feel good" points that AOC loves to do.

I'm looking for realistic solutions to existing pressing problems. With inflation being a major issue right now, and new developments piling on, AOC knows she isn't being realistic bringing up tuition canceling.

We can't even deal with the more pressing problems that Republicans are obstructing yet AOC for attention is bringing up an issue that would only make matters worse, but sounds great in her fans ears.
